Surviving Minnesota!

Good sorta morning. Noon is close enough, right?

My little Leghorn chicks are almost two weeks old. They're a bit on the spunky side. I have a RIR chick as well and she's not nearly as excited about life as the WL's. I hope this isn't the start of crazy.

Thanks Kloppers. No worries. I've always known she wasn't appropriate for our set up. But she enjoyed a long run here on the property and she surely made us giggle and gave me a consistent broody schedule when I needed it. She was sort of amazing actually. She did really well free ranging for a long time. But something got the sneak on her Saturday. RIP Dixie Doo.... She'll be fondly remembered. For certain. And I meant to do this earlier... Here's her little Memorial...Photo Montage for BYC immortalization. :)
That's funny we call our hound Dixie Doo all the time!

When they're younger the Leghorns are excited about everything. After there first egg they basically stop though. Mine used to fly up onto my shoulder all the time, and then when they statues laying they were calmer

The interstate is closed.
We have some 6 foot drift heres

Here's some other drifts

We store our trampoline and old windows in here since it doesn't have a door

Corrals

My dad was telling me that when he was 3, 6, and maybe 10-12 they had some bad ones. There were some east winds and the snow got so deep the motorgraders, since they owned a construction business was fully covered, and the horses could walk out of the corrals the snow was so high

Aart gave a nice description on how to check a pullet to see if eggs are imminent. And I think I did it! My welsummer and black EE are a ways off. Their little pelvic bones are closer together than my two finger breadths. I'll have to check a laying bird to compare the difference. When I checked the new non layers they were all roosted. Didn't think to try a layer.

a couple flakes floating around here. The girls were out enjoying the grass while it lasts tonight.

putting the final touches on the proposed floor plan for our new house. Hopefully will be meeting with some builders soon to firm it up to and make plans! I am nervous that a builder is going to try to upsell us on stuff. we are trying not get neck deep in debt here but also dont want to cut too many corners. looking for a good balance.

I wont let the attached chicken sun room be struck from the plan though ;)

Attached chicken sun room sounds wonderful!

So, my girls have quit eating for some reason. Fi started molting about a week ago, so that is normal for her to quit eating, but I don't know why the rest aren't eating

then I grabbed some feed, cracked grains, and brought it to the roost in two different cups, they ate like they never saw food before? That is 3 days in a row they are not eating their feed. I wonder if because Fi isn't eating (she is kinda the leader and adventurous one) maybe the others aren't? I don't know. These birds confuse me... yesterday I brought them Boss on the roost before bed, they ate that like crazy too. Wait and see I guess. don't see anything in their poo, no bugs either (I check them everyday).

Something scared them the other day in the run as well. I went out to let them out to free range and they were all in the corner and wouldn't budge until I went in and chased them from the big run to the small run, then they went outside. They have not gone out into the big run since, not sure what they are scared of... it is just so weird.

I clipped the girls nails tonight. I didn't want to go to short, plus they were fighting me something fierce. I'll probably cut a little more off in a couple of weeks.

Well, if anyone has any ideas about these silly girls let me know!

Seems odd Cluckies. I have to say. But sounds like you have it figured out with the lead hen moulting...? Do you think they wait on the scratch and BOSS? Maybe they are trying to train you? I know you are too smart for that, though....

You've been around the block a few times with these chickens.

My sister's aren't eating their feed now. She was telling me this weekend. Upon further questioning of my Newbie Sister, they are spoiled brats holding out for meal worms and scratch which they get when they are holding the parked cars hostage and using them for cover. Her teenage son has been throwing scratch to get them out from under his truck before he goes to school. LOL. Full little crops there before 8 bells I'm guessing. Full of seeds and freeze dried mealies. I told her that she needed to switch things around...be tough.

The plumber stopped by today and will be finishing off my bathroom downstairs on Friday. Yay! I can hardly believe it! And Can hardly wait. I need to get FIL to connect my Fan Light and then we'll be good to go for sure. A storage unit or towel closet is needed. But I think I will try that on my own. Some shelving with pallets or something along that lines. Will get photos when completed. For sure. Got a compliment from the plumber..."This is turning out nice down here." Woot!
