Surviving Minnesota!

Saw a thick 4x4 mulie buck. He needs to grow out a year or two until I'd shoot him. Nice thing is he was hanging out below the house so hopefully he stays there til 2017 season. Hopefully my HON(Hunting only neighbors) feel the same towards him. I think I am getting APA Standard of Perfection!!!

Hey all, finally caught up. I updated iOS last night and BYC wasn't working right. It would only load one post on the top of a page. Odd! Better today it seems.

-10 here this AM. Just a thin skin of ice on the water pan. Busted it up and good to go. Kept the door shut today. No need for them to go out in this. After work I am going to stop off at fleet farm for heat tape. My spigot in the shed can get a tad sticky when it's cold. Had to blow torch it a few times last winter. I suspect it isn't draining down as well as it used to. Also think I will cover the north windows in the coop with refletix to help conserve warmth. The windows are single glazed barn sash. Drafty indeed! Stay warm fellow chickeners

Same temp here Kloppers.

I just came in to get a cup of coffee, I have been out keeping the smudge pots going around my Banana plants.
A good day to stay indoors. It's only estimated to warm up down here on Friday so it can snow. Supposed to be several inches.

I need to quit lolly gagging and get my oat fodder going again. I know my girls would appreciate it

I just got back from doing chores.

I managed to get a few eggs before they froze. I got three good toad eggs. I think I lost a DOM egg to the STUPID pullet I took to New Ulm where it picked up the bad habits of Southern Minnesota chickens. It had rolled into the area I wanted, but she managed to get under and to it to peck a hole and suck out the innards.

I threw her in with the rooster, raised the end of her cage another 1 1/5 and moved the blocking boards forward and inch, while covering the top better.

Hopefully this will stop her from getting to the egg. I am afraid I may never be able to let her out in a coop again. I would snip her beak, Jerry Style, but I think the judges would frown on the snipped beak next year. She is my best looking pullet so I guess I just put up with it. I might have to buy an egg factory type cage for her.

I had to crack corn today too, If I was smart I would have done it when it was warmer. I only do a Cattle watering tank at time so I need to do it often.

It appears Cuddles is going to lose a point on his comb. I guess he is done being shown, This cold is hard on the birds and me. A good thing about the cold is Turkey bedtime, I did not have to chase one to get them inside. 22 are in the rafters and on the roosts inside. 4 are all that are sitting outside.

I took some pictures of the Appletiniis. They are the only birds not going into their coop. They are staying under a Lean too, I have that is open on the west side instead of going into the coop. Everyone else is huddled in the coop this evening.

Here are Appletiniis:

And here are the toads.

They are sitting on a 2x4 roost and the PVC is 4 inch PVC to give you an idea of their size. You can see the size of their nest too. It started as 2 nests but they pushed the divider so far to get in and out, it is now a one nest box.

those apple tinis are neat! i dont think ive ever seen a photo of them before. I see why you like them.

working on my fodder tonight. i went out to the garage to get the oats, barley, and BOSS i set aside for fodder and could see some mice had been in it. The cat that my wife dislikes (socks) followed me in, which is part of the reason he annoys my wife. he goes in buildings and wont come out so we have to remember to go let him out. Anyways he is on alert so i can tell he knows where the mouse is. i pick up the bucket he was focused on and 4 little mice sit there no bigger than a quarter a piece. We proceeded to work as a team to annihilate the whole litter. I suspect there is a mommy mouse around somewhere to be had as well. DW is now admitting maybe socks inst so bad :)
