Surviving Minnesota!

Ralphie I put one of your Legbars to good use... She is becoming a cage chicken with HeiHei. Maybe she'll lay some eggs and I can hatch some eggs from them... They look a little cold don't they? Darn birds. I had to move them to a cage in the corner of the coop so there was enough room for the two.

And I think the cold is effecting my Guineas brains Ralphie. One walked up to me today and stared at me. He was just sitting there and I'm like what in the h-e-double hockey sticks are you sick or something so I was gonna try catch him and he just sat there and let me pick him up? And he was fine for a minute or two and then went bat crap crazy and starting biting me and trying to fly away! I think they heard me talking about how naughty they are and that they have to shape up or they're gonna be shipped out and finally couldn't take being good anymore? It was weird. I even got a pic while he was being good. See he wasn't even giving me the stink eye!

Do they need a permit to keep the hawk?

How did they get it? *the hawk not the permit

Is it like a Falcon, on some hunt someday it just decides it is done being a slave to a person and takes off?

I believe there is some kind of permit yes. She has to be a member of the club to do it and had to go through an apprenticeship first. Also since she is a minor she is only allowed to keep a red tailed hawk. When she is older and more experienced she would be able to have a bigger raptor.

As far as the how... they actually trap them in the wild. The have this interesting sounding trap where basically it is a little cage they will put a mouse in and there are big loops if essentially fishing line around it. The bird comes down for the bait and gets caught up.

I didn't ask about how long they keep them or what happens. I do know this is her second bird. The first one she caught didn't respond to training well so it was released back to the wild. This new one was very young when she caught it and seems like it is doing well.

Coffee was thinking of getting rid of her guineas, then today they alerted her to a possum.. The possum had a fatal accident. Now she may keep them.

I would like to get rid of mine, but really I have no idea how many times they have alerted the chickens to danger. Stupid Guineas!

OK after this I am done but just thought I would post pics of how combs are holding up here.

OH GREAT! Now I have rabid Guineas! Just when you thought they couldn't get any worse!

They make up for their dumbness with their annoying alarm calls! They love alerting us when the cows come up to drink or when the tractor drives past or when a cat walks by... They don't alert us to anything useful... BUT THEY CHASE AWAY SPARROWS AND SQUIRRELS FROM THE FEEDER! SO they will stay hear for as long as they want... Or until they do something so stupid that an axe accidentally falls on their necks...

My guineas lost their last hope of staying here after they failed to warn me of a mink in my coop....
