Surviving Minnesota!

Darn Guineas! This video is from about two weeks ago and since they have started causing trouble up in the trees my young Juvenile pullets and cockerels have decided to follow them up there! Hopefully I can get a video with the Juvies up there with them... Darn Guineas

Guineas.

If you were to make a list of pros and cons....I think you will select not to have guineas. One would think. At the risk of Lyme disease and anaplasmosis...I select not to have guineas.

My brother got Lymes and after seeing that we are glad to give the Guineas a home where they can eat ticks. It's a nasty disease. He couldn't move without being in screaming pain. And on top of that I broke three of his bones in his leg and foot 2 weeks before he was diagnosed with Lymes...

Guineas are one of those birds you love and hate at the same time. They can do so much good on bug patrol. But they are such pains in the rear with the unwanted noise.

They are super watch dogs and no one is going to sneak into any building or anywhere else on your farm.

They spend way too much time trying to rob passing vehicles on the road.

They die all to often from their robbery attempts.

I really like the 3 adults I have they stay near the buildings. sleep with the turkeys and chickens and are pretty quiet for Guineas. These three are some of the first birds into the coop at bedtime.

They really are just PITAs.

I wish I could just send all my young to freezer camp, but they cause no problems while locked up, jusy eat too much feed.

Now on a brighter note, I opened the hatcher and got to see my chicks up close and personal. I ended up with 4 Toads, 2 Doms and the 2 SS. Hoping for the Doms and SS to be roosters. The Toads I do not care.

When I opened the door they all rushed me. They wanted to be held and cuddled... ( Yes. Jerry and EJB, I cuddled them just a tad, Judy cuddled them more though!)..

They are drinking so I am happy. Poor hatch rate but they look good and healthy.

I'm glad the ones that hatched are doing good. Are you not usually a chick cuddler?

Fingers crossed for Roosters Ralphie. LOL. Don't always type that one out.

I like quiet. The kids were giggling and 1/2 fighting last night. I need to get myself acclimated to this newer level of play these two have going on. But the noise. I've decided I'm not a noise person. Thus never will there be a guinea. I have mouthy teenagers to compensate.

A little known fact many people use Guineas to find truffles. Guineas have quite the nose on them.
