Surviving Minnesota!

Hi Peeps, been busy the last couple of days. Scrapbooking friday and saturday all day, Celebrating daughters bday saturday night (early by a couple of weeks, she will be in colorado on her bday), my mom upholstered the top of DH's ottoman brought it over yesterday, looks really good, we picked out the material last weekend. Cleaned the house, felt like spring, did some spring cleaning. Can't wait for spring to come for real! Back to work tomorrow, kinda depressed about that. I like having time off, I get so much done. I don't have time to work anymore, don't they know that? lol

Sorry about all your losses this weekend

The chick pics are so cute.

BTC, Lily is lovely. One of my EE also had laying issues/internal laying. she was the best, my favorite, so curious.

Nite all!

Thank you @cluckies. She was a aloof yet funny chook. She didn't want to be held but was pretty quick to figure out we were having lunch on the deck. Miles ahead of everybody else. Lol. They do have their own personalities. When you have just a few you get to know the personalities.

Just heard a blurb that chickens have social intelligence perhaps along the lines of dolphins. Smarter than they are given credit for. I think most of us know that on here.

MnNice.. Sorry, I forgot who had asked, then forgot anyone had asked.

I use them for a couple reasons.

I can get more eggs into a tray...

The chicks can hatch without getting bumped around by those out of the shell

And most importantly I can put "fences" around the cartons so I know which chick is which breed and keep them separate. In a small hatch like the one in the picture with 3 breeds so different from each other it was not necessary, it is just habit. I do use the foam cartons because I think the paper ones suck up moisture but I have no proof of that,

Do you have any issues with them hatching in the cartons? I'm going to get some fertile eggs from a friend this week and may try the carton method when it's hatch time. It always made me a bit nervous watching the hatched chicks play bumper cars with the remaining eggs.

BC I just read an article about chicken intelligence & emotions. The rest of the world may be catching up with us chicken owners.

As far as eating on the deck...I have to incarcerate my turkeys if I have any food out after an unfortunate incident with a pizza.

The buffies are laying! The buffies are laying! 3 eggs from 3 birds...in one day. Not bad except one bird is a roo.on Sunday night I checked on everyone gave a stern warning. Monday morning daughter did the chores and nothing. Monday night I brought home feed and did the chores only to find 3 eggs. What the heck.

Morning!!! I almost won!!!

Memphis I have read that before, maybe here, I do not remember where. The article said a chicken can remember and recognize 100 different chicken faces.

MnNice. I cannot say I have had any issues with it. I set them air sac up and they seem to do fine crawling out. If I have one with a side air sac I will try to lay it air sac up, but they seldom hatch anyways.

MnChickMom Wow Grats on the buff eggs.....and I cannot believe you are so lucky as to have one of those egg laying roosters. Do you know how rare they are? Maybe you should contact the university, they may pay a small fortune for an egg laying rooster.

He does look like a rooster...Hmm maybe one of the girls had two eggs in the works at the same time. Pullets do weird things with egg laying.

Fever again today so I'm staying home today. This way though I can organize a shelf thing that I'm going to fill with all my chicken books and magazines
