Surviving Minnesota!

Becker county is not big in poultry and usually there is only market or egg laying so when it comes to breeding pen I should have it in the bag but never say never. We are big for swine and cattle and even rabbits. We have a huge building that is going to need a new addition. We had very little room last year and 50+ new members joined this year. It should be interesting!

We are finally building our own fair ground! I'm Hoping they have a different building for every species... My county is big in everything but poultry which is why I took home 1st and grand in everything last year

Nope it comes premade!!

Just add ice, I prefer Ice Chips for a cold. Of course, I being a man, get much sicker than a woman does so you may have to use less of this.

I think I just threw up in my mouth.

Awesome! 4H is great! I have a gardening project too. My sister always does the gardening and natural lotions and scrubs with essential oils. My mom and sister make everything from laundry soap to scrubs and lotion with "natural" stuff and lots of with craft potions ( essential oils). They are kind of oil freaks and have now become distributors so have multiple orders of oils come in a week. My aunt in Brainerd also does a lot of that stuff.

Once I have everything together to make my own soap, I'm going to make you your own personal scent. I'm going to call it Buckeye Holm. My guess it will help Ralphie and I marry you off quicker. We're all really looking forward to the party....just sayin'....

I was roaming through Fleet Farm the other day and was surprised at the growth of their bee keeping section. Last season I think it was just an end cap. They also have their feed on sale for those of you who buy from them.

Oh, and @destiny_56085 , thanks for the partridge information! It actually makes sense and genetics is that one thing I scratch my head at. Pictures always help, too, so thanks again!

I would love to bees around here. But we have bears that wander through raiding the retirees bird feeders. I think they'd put me out of business very quickly wrecking expensive beehive supplies and such. Mann Industries (one of the few beekeeping suppliers) has their headquarters just 20 miles to the west of me . So they'd be handy getting started up. But again that's a time constraint thing also. I could probably hotwire fence the hives. Too many irons in the fire with these kids.

My mom does have a hot fence around hers because they too have bears.

My "americana/americauna/whatever mutts are finally giving me something!! They were hatched on August 29th so it's been a long and annoying wait. Note- these are indeed normal sized eggs. My hands are just "childsized". Do you know how hard it is to try to hold 3 eggs in a child sized hand?!

Question --------- somebody was "cooing" when I was just out there doing chores. What does that mean..................??????? I have 2 older hens and 8 younger-just-coming-of-age hens..... All seemed well? Are they excited to be laying eggs and have to express how proud they are?

My favorite cold remedy is "Hot Buttered Rum"; Except instead of rum I use whiskey.

Hot Buttered Rum batter is as follows:

1# brown sugar 1# powder sugar 1# softened butter 1 qt vanilla ice cream

Mix sugars and butter together w/hand mixer - add ice cream and mix; freeze in mason jars and use as many dollops as you wish (ok fine, use 1 dollop) in your hot water + shot of whiskey night cap.

Did i mention this recipe is LOW fat and NO calories???? Sweet right~~~

I love that sound. I hear it when they roost at night. I think it's a sound of contentment.
