Surviving Minnesota!

One of my pullets I hatched last fall is laying. Beautiful dark Olive egg! And everydsy they keep getting darker! AND she is laying everyday!

And pics. Ralphie can you find the Legbar egg? 7 Blue/Green eggs the past two days!

If I squint hard I think I can find the legbar egg.. I am going to ask Jerry to help me on those legbar eggs this summer. When the egg is round like that I want to have a red circle on the eggs when it is laid marking the air sac so I know which end goes up in the carton.... The other day when I candled I found another egg I had upside down in the incubator... I cannot believe I am so old and my memory so short I forget from the time it takes to candle and place in the rack which end had the air sac....Old age is so fun... I bet when I get as old as ED I will forget how to even turn the light on to candle....

This pullet is actually from my birds. Only green egg I got to hatch all year! And I was luck enough to get a pullet! She is out of my EE that got that huge cut last fall and my old Australorp/Welsummer roo. Here is a better pic of her and a pic of her and her momma together.

The really round one is a CLB. I have to pick her eggs out of the poop board everyday cuz she has yet to learn to use a nest box lol! The other Legbar that likes the taste of human blood has a nest hidden somewhere and I cant find it! We see her sneak off and cant find her and then watch her come back and still cant find the nest! They are really good at hiding though... I suppose she will go broody this spring and become a meal for a nasty coon... OR I could put her with my bantam Cochins and hatch a few fun mutts... Dont know...

I can see now from picture it is not one of mine...

It is a cheap imitation.

Holmes that's an extraordinary egg.

What you did with the cow yesterday was also extraordinary. Not many people get that task or have the fortitude for it. I've said it before and will say it again kiddo. You are beyond your years. And if this gives you any comfort. June bug at home and not at slaughter house. Much better 'bad day' if there is such a thing. Hugs.

I was super excited about it! Momofmany got the first one I have ever got from that pullet and the nice thing is she started with nice largeish eggs so they are fine for hatching!

Thank you BC. I enjoy this lifestyle and figure if I wanna keep doing it I better be able to do that. I have helped butcher since I was 5 (ok maybe not so much help as much as watch in fascination) but have never had to actually do the dispatching myself. We still have one more cull to butcher that had a rough calving and screwed up her whole lady system lol. She wont breed back anymore so was fattened up over the summer.

Hello from Scandia, excited to find a group that has all the fun MN fun chicken keeping facts, help and pointers. I'm excited for warm weather to start playing and expanding my little co-op/run!
