Surviving Minnesota!

Good Morning.

Jerry, I was blessed with a split night of sleep last night (again) I fell asleep before 7, woke up at 11 and then wen back to sleep around 3. I was so cold when I came in from outside last night the warmth in the house knocked me out...

Which brings me to the next "falsehood" I need to correct. Momof3-5 or more.... Spring should be here now, You live way up north, so you need a calendar date to mark spring or you would never know when it is there...

I live in the banana belt which is a strange little area of equatorial earth transport by some strange time/distance distortion to middle Minnesota. Beings we are a tropical area we get spring earlier. The sun sneaks across the equator warms us and sneaks back in such a way we actually have spring way before you... I know it is a hard fact to understand, so just trust me on it.

BC. I spend most the night thinking about the salt in my chickens treats. I have decided to keep giving them the treats. I feed the layers table scraps which I am sure has salt in it. The birds I give the puppy burgers to are show birds. You now how show people (Hollywood) have a high rate of substance abuse. My chickens are not different. They refuse to go without it now. It makes the layers feel good when they are using their cheap imitation abusive substance (table scraps). So Psychologically it is good for all the birds. Even if physically it might not be the most healthy choice. They use me for a role model on these things and I do not always make the best choices physically speaking either.

Also, if I feed salt to my chickens I do not have to add as much salt to my eggs in the morning. I actually have thought about patenting and marketing my eggs as pre-salted eggs. I think there is a huge market for them!

As for today, I have no idea what I will do if anything it is just too darn cold out.

Something doesn't line up here.

Layers: you've had a winter from Hades. We've had nothing compared to you guys.

I think with this next bout of snow we will he above 60 inches. Hopefully this means next year is mild.

I really need to clean the chick brooder hopefully track ends early and I can do that tonight. I also need to get the blue hen AIed to the black cockerel so that I can have her eggs. I will probably start collecting on the 19th of March since I decided to join the Hatchalong. Hopefully I can set at least 14 eggs from the cochins. I still need to think of a divider so I know who's chicks are who's when the hatch. I am really excited to get some splashes though and possibly some smooth blue males and maybe some Frizzle blue females! I am not sure what I will keep of the chicks though I am sure I will wait til October or so to decide but it will be hard.
As my laying hens don't lay as much I keep telling myself only 14 more weeks! I can't wait until the Leghorns and NNs start.

What do you think male or female?

Ralphie I'm feeling guilty over your sodium induced insomnia. I hope the WWD will allow you a nappage of some sort.

Ivie may hitch a ride with you north sometime so she can see arctic circle people. Haha. But you can't smuck a deer.

I want to stay home and not venture into -13f this morning.

Layers. Once the bird is beyond 4 days I'm out for sexing wing feathers.

How's the tail feathers? Shanks? Stance?
I'm not sure if Cochins feather similarly as a standard chicken. Also if I had to guess on those solid colored adolescent wing feathers-- male?

Ralphie I treated mine to worms and greens yesterday of course we have those in the tropics now . Banana belt should have them soon . I moved a few pieces of firewood and found some worms as a side benefit . I was tending some fabric pots and removed some dandelions . Perennial stinging nettle is up and growing . I do not pick that stuff for chickens or me . Said to be healthy IDK .

BC, I am so glad your feeling guilty about the salts. That was the entire purpose of the entire post. I am so glad to be rewarded for said post...

Last week I was thinking mushrooms. Now I am just thinking about hot cocoa and sitting under a comforter with my feet up.... I assume you have lost some of the mushroom thrill also with this nasty cold..

Banti you are just going to have to learn to trust and believe in me the way the others on this thread do...

Layers, PLEASE make sure you drain every drop of moisture out of that weather system before you allow it to move this direction. Thanks!

Low of -6 this AM. I am definitely North of the Banana Belt. Cold for the next week as per forecast, but it helps to keep some of the vermin out.
Ralphie, are you going to New Ulm this weekend. I believe there is some type of sale there ?
Although we switch to daylight savings time this weekend, Spring is not here !!
