Surviving Minnesota!

Emorical thanks so much for all that info! You sure do know your stuff! One day you're gonna have to teach me!

Ralphie it was the pic of me holding a little Legbar in my Mossy Oak shirt. If you get half my income will you buy half of my feed? :p

Had a busy afternoon... Butchered a Dairy Heifer (June Bug if you remember Lady's first calf) and boy was that rough... Sad... My brother and I got stuck with the job of sticking and shooting... blah... Good to learn cuz my grandparents won't always be around to do that part for me.

Also at the farm we farm at all the cows are less than a month away from calving except for maybe 3-4. Most are bagging up and lost their Mucis plug...

I'm going to shout this out and probably most will ignore me but I've heard that dog/Cat foods although giving higher protein are also higher in sodium or salt. Not always a good thing for birds...? Idk. I haven't had feather picking so I'm sure I would do something to try to curb it. If other things didn't work.

Cluckies I saw a nose ring designed feather picking deterrent. The ring just sets in the nostrils and It sits in the beak like a bit. They get used to it pretty quick this lady said. They can eat and drink but cannot grab a feather. Of course they need breaks from it for preening themselves once a week. Another option.

I'm not sure I'm crazy about this method but I bet it works.

Good Morning Chickeners . . . . Cold and sunny. For me, the sunny makes up for the cold this time of year.

I had read about the high sodium content of cat food on a blog. So I did not feed that when I had the feather pickers. I upped their protein with game feed at 22%. I just bought a large bag of chick starter to add to their layer feed which I purchase. I opened my pockets because I only have 20 birds - and began purchasing the Purina with the extra omega. They say that it has everything the birds need BUT I find their shells to get thin if I do not supplement with oyster shell and egg shell. It does not take much more calcium to toughen up those shells.

Just saying . . . .
