Surviving Minnesota!

LOL, that's what I was thinking because he was courting a hen outside the coop for a few minutes...I thought he was mad because I had the door closed! But then he kept calling to the hen and it seemed he was trying to show her what to do?? (as if she doesn't know already ya dumb boy!)

I am guessing the "girl" he is trying to instruct is typical of the sex. Short memory flighty and had no idea what to do or how to do it right without his teaching her again.

I can read the look on his face it says " Okay, but this it the last time I show you"

Knowing full well she will forget it again........

It could be that she wants to poop somewhere else. Or that she wants to get to greens. I would open it up. If that's what you're seeing. Maybe after the snow though now? They'll be ok another day in there while the momma teaches the younger chicks. It may not hurt that you supervise the first free ranges though too. Just to be sure the Broodies do their protective stance against other flock members. I've seen a chicken fling a chick across the run. I don't think they knew what it was. Anyways I'm sure you get the picture.

Ed, Siggie, Jerry.... this is a bad recurrence of April Fools? I was going to get the JD lawn mower pulled out...

It's really coming down now. I think a 1/2 inch in the last 20 minutes.
Thanks, I will definitely be supervising for a while. I think I will start by closing the coop door and just letting them run around inside for a bit. Thankfully, it has already stopped snowing here so we just got a dusting, nothing significant or needing shoveling!

Snow on the ground and still snowing. Our Mn. Banana Belt weather was short lived.

It appears Ralphie has returned from the vicinity of Saskatoon. I hope you had a productive time there Ralphie.

I wish I had went to Saskatoon. However, I find it dangerous to return there. Something about a dead Coyote in my buddies truck as we crossed the border from a duck hunting trip,,and it not being a duck.

They are very protective of their coyotes up there.

I have actually been trying to get some things done while fighting these headaches and watching grandmunchkins.

The chicks the broody wouldn't except ( I didn't try too hard) are going to be 6 weeks old and they found a way to escape the pen inside the run and are integrating themselves pretty well.
The broody is still broody

so I got 4.5 fertile eggs from a lady down the road and put those under her today. That should cure her. I hope.

Siggie how are your littles doing?

Shame, shame. Somehow methinks it was your own truck and not your buddies'.

Hello Chickeners . . . . although the crowing won't begin for another four hours I thought I would greet your day early.

Hey ILLS - good job on your track qualifications. At least it sounds like its good. Like I previously said - I don't know much about track but your threads sound excited.

Lets see, the run totals close to 190 sq ft so 19 birds would be okay in there and I have 14 in that run. A portion of it is covered. I am sure I did something wrong this winter as, at time - although not often, I raked the stuff from the covered run out into the uncovered run and all that stinky stuff did not stink until I began digging it out of the back portion of the open run. Won't do that again. However, it was the first time (I did not clean it out like that after the very first year) I did a dig cleaning. Could not figure out what the big deal of cleaning the coop and run was about when other chickeners brought it up last year. When I went into the covered, plastic-ed run over the winter I used PDZ and pine needles and leaves and pine shavings. There was a time during Spring thaw in January that it did smell and I discovered that water had been leaking into the ground and that added moisture. Took care of that. Its all practice. I am learning and thank you for your input. It helps.

Out of 19 hens I got 16 eggs today!

Siggie - love that little silver/grey chick. They are all cute! I would love pics of the light silver to see how it feathers out. Hopes its a pullet.

Went up to Aitkin. Yeah - it had definitely changed up there since he cleared and excavated and put in class 5. Met the neighbors and they seem nice and she and I have many hobbies in common so that is good. They are retired to that home and left a home in New Hope and I think she is having a difficult time adjusting.
IT SNOWED - of course - many of you got snow. I made breakfast and headed home by 10:00 a.m. The sun was shining here.

Morning . I assume your snow melted . Another busy day ahead .More logging . Hope to finish today . Rain coming Tuesday night and Wednesday . The woods is fragrant with autumn olive blooming . Sat around the campfire last night . So relaxing .

The low this morning was 31 and on top the hill above the big lake the wind has been fierce. Anything not nailed down very securely is not around to deal with any longer.

The chickens free range every day now come hell or high water. They find cover when necessary and also find tasty morsels to pass their time enjoyably and without being cuddled I would add.

Snow is melted Jerry and most of the Snowbirds have returned for the Spring and Summer. You may come at your own risk anytime now.

Hmm they start early . I noticed the town swells on weekends . Everyone leaves the cities for the weekends .Friday through Monday . Must be a lot of absences at work . At one time the lake was mostly out of state owners . Now it is mostly in state owners . Hollidays are hectic . I try to avoid or at least stay out of town on those .
