Surviving Minnesota!

Ralphie met with me today to deliver a PC rooster and a trio of Appenzeller Spitzhaubens.
I really appreciate it Ralphie and happy to report all are nicely settled to their new quarters. The PC rooster thinks he has died and gone to chicken heaven, as their is a big flock of ladies and no other rooster to compete with.
The Spitzhaubens remind me of McGraws which I used to have, except the McGraws laid a blue egg.

I bet he is one happy boy!

Don't forget to Hug him good morning, cuddle a bit at noon and tuck him in at night He expects it.

I have never heard of a McGraw. I will have to look it up.

Good morning all, made it back...

The broody PC hatched the .5 egg, none of the other 4 developed. So we have a lone banty chick born Sunday. The hen is very protective, pecked my thumb good and it bled.

Well this is a bit weird and confusing... took me about 5 minutes to find this thread. I've been pretty busy lately. School ends on Thursday, and I am very excited
Last chance track meet yesterday. Ran a 47.89 in 300 Hurdles, PR, which puts me at 5th in the state. I also PRed in high jump with a jump of 5' 3" breaking the school record, and bringing me to second in the state. Our girls relay was really close to qualifying and got second so we should be able to qualify by place on Saturday.
An article on the meet, I got interviewed for.

Ralphie, when we spoke yesterday you did not mention the Toads I don't think ? Are you planning to continue them or just going to raise the hatchery cornishX for meat purposes?

I don't know if you will find much of anything on the McGraws ? They were developed by Dr. Albert McGraw in Alabama. He used the SS Spitzhauben and other birds to develop them. They were Silver Spangled, of moderate size and laid blue eggs. I got mine from Dan Powell in Wisconsin. I think that they may have been lost as a breed at this point. Dr. McGraw is dead, and his flock which his son was continuing with was lost to some type of predator.
The Zierke's got Dan Powells flock when he sold out and moved out of the country, but that flock is gone as well.

Nice job ILL! My DD is chasing state also. She really wants to go even more so because she wants to go as a 7th grader. She's pretty determined. She has set personal records at every track meet. Sub sections is next week on Thursday.

That's pretty cool! Does MN have a junior high state meet? What does she run or throw?

We have a very small school and she was asked to run varsity. She also runs at the Junior High meets if there is not a varsity meet the same day.

Her current times which also keep dropping each meet are as follows:
400m 1:06
800m 2:44.49
1600m 6:06

She also runs on a 4x200m relay which I think runs about 2:00.
She does not run all of these each meet though. She wants to try high jump next year or triple jump. Right now she doesn't do any field events.
I am not sure she will make state but she has that goal set and is trying hard to get there.

.

I am going to stay with the toads. I have got them to the point their numbers are increasing and they are longer lived. I just like the idea of a sustainable meat bird. I have started spreading them out. MomofMillions has some, MnChickmom has some, a 4h family near me have some....Holms had some but he killed his. I might let him try again, I heard he over cuddled his.

I remember you telling the story of the McGraws now that I hear it again..Old age does that to one...
