Surviving Minnesota!

Hello all...I am sitting at my living room window watching the Red Breasted Grosbeaks sitting under the awning of the feeder trying to get out of the rain... even the birds have had enough!

good luck tomorrow with your inspection Ralphie! and way to go I Love Layers!!:thumbsup

I am taking a break and watching them too. I also have a scarlet Tanager here....And I saw one in the woods yesterday while mushrooming. I do not think I have ever seen one of them in the woods before....

I had a strange bird here. I looked it up and it was a female Scarlet tanager. They look like a entirely different species.

WOW! I have never seen a scarlet Tanager but would love to! I am a fanatic birder, love them!! We have had some Evening Grosbeaks here the last few days as well, Purple Finches, Red Polls, Gold Finches, and all the usual's...The Blue Jays are dominating the feeder right now so nobody else can get to the feed.

Joining the thread... We are buying a hobby farm in Nowthen in July, and I'm getting pretty excited about it. We might not get animals until next year, but I'm guessing chickens/guineas will be first, and I'm trying to learn what I can.

Sounds like everyone is seeing cool birds! A new one we saw at our place a week or two ago was the golden crowned kinglet.

I feel dumb, I thought I had a female oriel, I think it was the Evening gross beak. I knew it looked wrong but could not figure it out.

We also have a pair of Pileated woodpeckers eating at our feeder, they destroy a suet cake in a day. Red Wing blackbirds have decided to eat here instead of the meadows too..

We even have Hummers back!!! I don't think I hve ever seen one of those golden crowned kinglets.

I had a male Pileated come to the suet over the winter. They are around but haven't come to the suet this spring. One did act as my alarm clock last friday when he was pounding on our log home right next to the bedroom window! I got out of bed and asked him What the heck - it's 5:30am in the blessed morning!!!? and he flew away! I actually used words that were a little stronger so I may have insulted him in some way?

I also love bird watching. Love all the pretty colors! We have lots of grosbeaks... Even had a Pine Grosbeak at the feeders yesterday. There was also an odd woodpecker the other day. All white with black wings and a red head. My siblings and grandpa saw it but I missed it...

I love watching birds, too. The usuals at my feeders are Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers, Red-bellied woodpeckers, Baltimore and Orchard Orioles, Chickadees, Nuthatches, Rosebreasted Grosbeaks, and Hummers (although I haven't seen any hummers this year yet - I usually do by now...)

It finally quit raining. I don't know for how long. Lots of wet ground here.

@holm25 look up red-bellied woodpecker and red-headed woodpecker, if you aren't familiar. Perhaps one of those is what they saw? I saw a bird in our neighborhood once (years ago) that the only bird I can find that looks like it is the red-headed woodpecker - except the size is all wrong, because the bird I saw was considerably larger.
