Surviving Minnesota!

I hate the broodies that play musical nest boxes...

I have 4-5 broodies now, They are driving me nuts. I take all the eggs everyday and they still manage to get more.

The bite, peck, scream, yell at me and refuse to move. I might have to put them in the elevated cages and give them a cold water shower for a day or two...

stupid burds.......

I have a question for all you experts...Have any of you found a single comb bird that will not winter trim? Maybe one where the SOP calls for a small comb? Just wondering for a line of conversation with legbar folks...

Bresse, Cochin, Bielefelder and Swedish Flower Hens all seem to do really well. Along with Naked Necks but I don't think you'd enjoy their looks

Well I went to the Elementary classroom yesterday afternoon and I got myself a New Hampshire Pullet and Welsummer Pullet from the classroom hatch. They are beautiful. It was fun watching their integration into the Ameraucana brooder. The Pecking order starts young. Ha! But the new birds held their own and one little black Ameraucana pullet seemed to have befriended them letting them eat by her, etc. I saw them all in one pile napping this morning so I think the order is in place and they are part of that miniature flock. Photos later when I have a momento.

Time is a precious commodity right now. Packing for Camping trip the weekend. Argh.

Tonight was sub-sections (regions) for track. DD place 6th in the 400m with 1:06:39. She took 3rd in the 800m and will advance to sections in that with a time of 2:33:43.She dropped another 6 secs tonight from last weeks time! So it was 11 secs in 2 weeks. I don't know where that girl keeps finding more speed! The 4 X 400m relay also took 6th.

Mom of many, congrats to your dtr. It is not that important if they win or lose, but more important if they make their best effort. It seems that she must be doing that ?

Ralphie, I would say if you really enjoy the Legbars it would be a worthwhile project to develop a rosecomb variety of them. Who cares what others in that group would think ?
You would be doing something to please yourself and it would be a service for Northern chicken keepers. I am sure that Jerry could be of assistance with the genetics.

Well I butchered a Buckeye roo last night and have decided I need a whole group of those cockerels lol! They have such a beautiful carcass. Lots of meat on them!

Foggy morning here. Was woke up at 5:30 to a Guinea going nuts. Guess the second female that disappeared the other day is back. So I have 4 Guineas again! Now I am watching the Mourning Doves pick bird seed off the ground under the feeders...

Good morning! It was raining this morning when I got up. Now just a gloomy gus kind of feel....and the %&! Tourists have arrived in droves....I am watching them all from my window at the post office. eeewwww....... we haven't even gotten our extra no trespassing signs up yet! (because they don't seem to see the other dozen we have up now!) We did not move far enough into the woods. According to the locals...there is no "far enough" into the woods if I am looking to get away from tourists. They find us no matter where we are. great.
So my Cochin is definitely not broody anymore but my Wyandotte is still sitting on 4 eggs (I got to look without losing a finger) and I did see her come out and eat and drink so I feel much better about her sitting.
Got another load of dirt yesterday and filled the other side of the greenhouse beds...I did not realize just how much room I have in there! I have my tomatoes, basil, cucumbers, dill, thyme and peppers planted and I still have 3/4 of the south side free and the entire center bed free to plant more good stuff!! I need to plant my onion shoots, carrots and beans which will take care of the rest of the side bed but I am trying to decide what to put in the middle? My strawberries are up in baskets above the center bed so their fruit will hang down and be easy to pick.
My rhubarb, blackberries, chives, parsley, Lemon Balm, catnip, and Yarrow have been planted outside so far. My pallet board fence is almost complete....it's getting to look like a real garden :ya
