Surviving Minnesota!

Psst.. Erlibrd Princess's twin sister would like to join Princess,,,,

She is in the cold cage again...

She is broody for a week when I finally get her broke, she is good for two days then broody again......

You should stop and save her, She could be headed to the freezer before long. This constant broodiness is more than I can handle. I am sure you would do better with her than I do.,
If I could just fine some.....Hmmmmmmm:lau:lau:lau:lau:lau
I'll getcha some dux eggs!!

Well, one last glance before bed. Why is my story that there is so much to be done? I don't have any more to do than any of you and certainly alot less than you with kids and jobs. Geeze!
Well, Suzy Sussex (all three are Suzy Sussex) is incredible. I wonder what I will find tomorrow morning. She is up and walking around - except when I confine her. Eating, drinking, clucking. Wanting to be with her flock. I noticed that her respiration rate slowed way down this a.m. when I took her out of the house and put her in the box on top of the coop near the flock sounds. This afternoon I went in to shower and when I came out, there she was! Out of the box and on the ground stumbling around like a drunk. Out came the small dog kennel. I posted earlier what I was giving her. Just closed the flock in their coop for the night and put her dog kennel in the coop. She is the chicken that could. I hope this keeps up tomorrow.

BC, I know about those roosters. Remember Tom. He loved his girls and did not pick on one but they were pretty much bared back. LOL. Poor Sylvia. Seriously, as an amateur chickener this is what I would do. Sylvia would have her own little nesting box (whether it is a black plastic box, cardboard box. . . doesn't matter - it is hers) in her own small private fenced-in area within the coop. Somewhere that she can fit under that fence but the roo could not. She can run there for safety. Has a water dish and feed dish. She could come out to roost or set up her roost. Maybe she would want a sleep over with one or two of the other girls Seriously. Its what I would do for a while til the situation got better. She deserves it. I also read that the older hens are still valuable for what they teach the other hens coming up in the flock. I would not get rid of either of them, just separate them so she has her safe place. Sweetheart. Oh - you too BC

MomofMillions.... Have you ever had any luck when two hens share a nest? I find they seem to kill the birds with their fighting to be the "Mother"..

I have no experience with this. I may take just one egg out and see if I can get her to sit in her own box. She changed boxes to another broody sitting on just two eggs. She seems to be a follower and not an aggressor. Hopefully it all works out. My hen #1 hatched out a beautiful Cuckoo Maran this afternoon. It has a lot of white on its head and some black dusky marks covering its feet but not neccsarily it legs I believe. I hope the other two hurry up and hatch or they will be put under another hen. No signs of pips on either of them yet.
Turkey eggs now have the incubator to themselves. If this works with the chicken eggs and someone is still broody next week I wonder if I should put turkey eggs under them? Sure makes life easier when Mama does the raising!

Today I've got volleyball open gym from 6-8pm, couldn't be a dumber time IMO, get to meet the new varsity coach. Tomorrow we have to go in to test birds for the show on the 29, and after testing I have to set up poultry and rabbit stuff. I'm still not sure when I'm going to wash birds. I was thinking Friday but I don't think I will have time. I'm thinking of maybe doing it Sunday and blow drying them.

ILL I would wash them before Friday. I wash mine 8-10 days before show. Then the birds have time to get their natural oils back. But it is a little more work keeping them clean. A wise poultry person taught me this :D

If you do wash them late. BUY Gallons of glycerin. It can help restore the shine. Along with Mineral oil and vetRX for the legs and combs.

I agree with Holm, A seasoned bird exhibitor taught me that too..
