Surviving Minnesota!

Wolves....great. At least the trappers and hunters around here keep the coyote population in check. Last couple years there hasn't been much snow cover so the hunters haven't been as active. The bald eagles (which are thick down here) have already decimated a lot of their food supply too. Another one of their not so brilliant ideas to introduce another protected species....

The guy last night ended up taking all the faverolles I had for sale... Out of show stock, but minor faults for showing.... Still nice looking birds though and better than anything I've seen from hatchery junk. I kept just the top cockerel and 5-6 of the best pullets to breed from. Plenty considering they lay all winter and every egg seems to be fertile from them. Now to just get rid of those spastic polish that I thought I had to have....

Please add Sand Hill Cranes to the list of Stupid Protected Animals List. - They are good for "nuttin".

I happen to have a few polish, I thought I had to have, if you would like to expand your flock....

Also I have some Appenzeller Spitzenhaubens I want to get rid of that I thought I needed... They are great birds, I just really need to get down to a few breeds and a few birds. I will miss the Appletinis, they follow me all around, and were just in the shed with me inspecting everything I was doing. They supervised the manufacturing of a new table for the incubator....They crawled into the drawers on my tables to check out bugs and things.

I want to be down to the point every bird I have will be inside the pole barn in cages this winter.

Destiny, remember I was told about the wolf thing so it may or may not be true...The sad part is, if it is not, we all have so little faith in our DNR we would expect an action like that from them.

Sandhills are suppose to be tasty MnChickMom...

No one else wants to type today, I will!

I might have a slight oxymoron here.

I just set eggs into the incubator for August 16th.

46 Cream Legbar, NO whites I hope. NO Creole, I hope.

About 36 PC eggs. Looking for the blue eggs carrier...

And 48 toad eggs.

I expect a low hatch due to age of eggs. They have been stored in the basement so the moisture should be good and they were cool, but my surgery and sickness caused the to sit too long. They either hatch or not. Makes no difference on most of them. I just need a few to hatch.

There is a story that old timers tell around here in Missouri that our conservation dept. Traded Texas whitetail deer for rattlesnakes some years ago. . of course m d c denies that this is true but ya never know! I've heard the same story about Arkansas trading turkeys for rattlesnakes. . .we already have timber rattlesnakes I don't know why we would need any more!

Okay so I'll get around to digging through this thread eventually but if anyone wants to throw MN chicken tips my way, I'll take them. We're renovating a 60+ year old coop this weekend in prep for my 4 Brahmas that are quickly outgrowing their brooder. Working on draft proofing it, animal proofing it, and what not. We're in almost Southwestern MN near the SD border.

Welcome to the thread!

Have fun building the chicken coop.

Good Afternoon Chickeners . . . . I sat down to work this a.m. and my cousin called me with genealogy info. I just quit ancestry at 1:30. LOL. It was a fun waste of time. Now I had to read you guys and hotmail and then I can go to Quickbooks. Ho Hum - who says I don't work
The sun is out and I am wondering how humid it is. I will step outside to find out. Tomorrow looks like a great day to do some more intensive gardening. The beds are beginning to look like something I can be proud of again.
Well, hope you have a great day everyone and to you Ralphie, there! you have a few words from me. Love all the stories from each of you.
P.S. after the gardens are done, which should be soonly, I am starting on the coops and doing some renovating and remodeling preparing for this winter. Remember, I now have the reciprocating, circular and drill that is all my very own. I can do a lot of damage with them. :hmm:wee
