Beautiful pictures! Looks like you had good weather.View attachment 1116833 View attachment 1116836 View attachment 1116837 Good morning Minnesotans. If you're still in state I hope you get to enjoy 84% of totality of the eclipse. Memphis I'm jealous of your picnic there in 100% today. Way cool. I don't think anybody is selling glasses in town for this. My kids are working so most likely will miss it all. Some partly cloudy skies today too.
Camping a success and started to relax the 2nd to last day. Could have went for another day or two up there. But the beverages were out and gray water tank was full. We get about 4 days on that...
Oh and not one chanterelle to be found on the premises.
Bobbi-j welcome back. Even though you are lighter on chickens...?! Sorry about that! But everybody on this thread seems to be looking to unload before winter. Lighter chicken chores seems like a good way to head into winter.
I have a little lavender Ameraucana trying to grow back blood feathers on her back. She looked a little bloody yesterday. I might have to saddle her up and take it off every couple days at roosting hours so she can preen. But the boys are tearing up those new feathers I think. She's going to need them big time here in a month or so.
My dad is heading into the Doc this morning. I don't know why I didn't see it sooner but I think his shuffling , joint aches from earlier this spring, now some neuropathy is stupid Lyme disease. He was pretty upset yesterday. Losing depth perception and ran over a crab apple tree he's Been babying for 5 years. So it's taken running over a dang tree to get him to a dr. Last night talking to my sister...I had my a-ha moment. And he's surely fitting the Lyme descriptions. Old stubborn buzzard... plants 500 trees and can't walk by August. Ah... yah! Duh.
TFred would love to see closer uppers of the partridge chanteclers! When you get the chance.
$15 and $10 for those level of POL hens and rooster is in the ball park if not on the 'good deal' spectrum. The poor souls plucked in the meat case: Nearly $10. So add in gorgeous plumage, egg production, Hand raised and reared with quality breeding practices, probably nicer living conditions, feed.. $15 is a Midwestern nice price. Go to Greenfire farms website and try not to let your jaw drop on the desk. Lol.
I had planned on reducing my flock before winter, just a little more judiciously and not quite as drastically... Oh well, it is what it is. Cleaned out the freezer today and found some freezer burned fish. I'm tempted to put some in the live trap in the coop that had the massacre and see if I can catch anything. "It" may have moved on since the chicken buffet closed, but you never know...
You have a beautiful coop! That little chick in the top picture is a cutie, too.So a little more work on the coop this weekend and we did end up putting the chicks in there. We haven't finished the floor or walls and there's no roosts or nesting boxes yet but at least they have more space. We'll have to work around the chicken crap from now on
But yesterday while the chicks were roaming the yard my BILs dog snuck over (across the highway). Didn't think anything of it since the dog has been around cats and other farm animals and hasn't eaten any yet and she's not been over to our place in ages. Well she found the chickens and snatched one up faster than we could react. Poor Chickaletta lost a bunch of tail feathers and a little blood. Doesn't seem to be any skin missing or punctures, just feathers and she stopped bleeding right away. But wow was that traumatic for us to watch. Luckily the boys were napping and missed it all. BIL is gonna have to keep his dog at his place from now on (they actually don't live across the highway the grandparents do, so if they keep the dang dog at the BILs actual house she's far enough away she won't be sneaking over I hope otherwise there goes my idea of free ranging these chickens).
