Yes I was going to say the mosquitos were not bad at all this year but everyone beat me to it :) ticks weren't too bad around my house but some just a few miles away had a really bad year with them, one lady went so far as to get guineas :hmm

With all the lakes we all are in the heart :love

Chicks are growing . Tried to sex some but it is still iffy . I can spot some cockerels but I know there are more than I see .

On plants I will push the zone . Seems not much real info on some of these . I have 2 black walnuts growing at the lake plus some black raspberries . Survived last winter . Not one of your more severe winters . I will try the Mystery lilies . I know the tiger and day lilies grow there . Day lilies are sometimes called tiger by some but they are 2 different lilies . I should have some ripe fall bearing black raspberries this trip . This was planted in May . The roots should survive and I should get a fall crop every year . The canes may also survive . Time will tell .
if worried cover them in the fall with leaves

I have 15 adult toads, got 5 toad eggs today. They seem to be getting along right now.

Wow 3 pages behind, and I read it all yesterday.

On this page:

BC I am thinking of getting injectable B complex, I am thinking it might be faster working and I know they take it in. If @Bantambird can figure out Excede I should be able to work out a dosage to inject. BTW I know it says not for poultry on the label, so I will consider this off label use. :lau

Welcome to the thread Chickmom. You are in the Banana belt, it might be the south west edge but I am sure you're in it.

Yes, SS are on the save list. I have too many years into them and they look too good, even if I do not have a decent pullet or cockerel to show this year. If Cuddles was to die I would reconsider them, but I can't get rid of Cuddles. It is just too unusual to have a rooster that wants to be held and played with.

When I open their cage 3 hens and cuddles all try to jump into my arms. Of course, when others are here they hang back just to make people think I am lying about their friendliness.

I have lots of nice looking Young SS, but they are not going to old enough to show this year, thanks to predators, both 2 and 4 legged ones.

Welcome to our "shoot the breeze" thread ChickMom. Lots of valuable advice and a little manure sprinkled in for good measure.

I need to set up a visit with Ralphie.....we lost both toad cockerels right after we showed them at the fair. The toad girls pulled through the stress just fine....I guess that shows the stronger sex. (Sprinkle Sprinkle) :lau

I too hope to get some Speckled Sussex from Ralphie before/if he decides to eliminate that breed.

As for mosquitos....you all must have been in the draught bans because in Central MN we never missed a rainshower and therefore every mosiquito egg that was laid hatched!

Hope all have a good Holiday weekend. Good to see that Ralphie is more active on here.
Jerry keep pushing the envelope on those plants for the Northland. If you are successful in developing a Japanese Maple variety that is hardy to the climate up here you will likely be on your way to a new level of wealth ?
Ralphie, tell us again which breeds will be retained by you or is it an ongoing process of determination ?

Welcome to the group chcikmom3941.

It is kind of on going, I am thinking of keeping:

SS
PC
Legbars
Doms
Toads.

I am sure I will keep some EE but I am not breeding them.
The Appletinis, and Yoki's are on their way out. Which is a shame after the Yoki won Grand Champ for MnChickMom, but I need to cut back.

Turkeys will be going down to a reasonable number. You need a turkey EJB?

The list is always subject to change. At the same time I am really thinking I would like a decent line of white Chanticlers.

ACTUALLY the mosquitos weren't bad this year. Neither were the ticks

I did not have that many either, I am thinking too many chickens and turkeys is the key to fewer insects. Yesterday, the turkey kids were out in the "pasture" chasing grasshoppers. A happy bunch of cooing and clicking birds.

Plus good free protein!

Holm's GC took her kittens from the perfectly fine box we had set up for them and hid them, again. I think you need to come and find them, and take them home. We agreed to taking 2 cats from you, you never said the one woul
