Surviving Minnesota!

So I have a guest sitting in a kennel in my diningroom area. That little bird does not have enough body mass to keep her warm. I would have let her freeze - its painless BUT she is a lapper even though she will probably never lay an egg. I keep giving her 2mm of apple cider water and she is actually opening her eyes but has not pooped once today. Dehydrated plus frozen? Its cold out there but all the other girls are doing fine and no heat. I spose now that I decided no lights and no heat this year it will be one of the coldest winters in history. Hey, I can change my mind.

Sorry your girl is feeling poorly Lvie. Yeah, being this cold already kind of bodes ill for the winter. I turned on their heater tonight... so yeah. This cold came so quickly, I don't think they are acclimated to it yet?

I did buy a radiant heater thing a magigy last Spring. But with two coops I think it will be installed in the larger of the two with the larger number of birds. There are three birds from the small coop that I would incorporate into the

oops to continue: incorporate in the larger coop but two or three birds in the smaller coop will never keep warm together. Time will tell what will happen.
DH and I were talking about the early cold weather (thank heavens there is a break in the cold coming!) and he said that he opened the 5th wheel in Aitkin the first week in April this past Spring. Maybe we will have an earlier Spring because the Winter will decide to move on out of here. Stay warm Chickeners.

My panel is not plugged in either. I’ll wait for another 5 degree drop. 0 and above I’m good with.

Grandparents farm was right off of 16 there. On the other side of the peak from the campground. Mom would get the dairy cattle down from milking off the hill side or hang onto tails coming up from the Root River. Picking wild flowers. Bare foot. Sort of dreamy thinking of her there with wild flowers and cows ambling along that pretty spot.
Grandpa bought the place and built a home with money he earned as a laborer building the Alaskan Highway.
My Dad's folks and our own family farm was near Utica. Their farms bordered Whitewater State Park.
Beautiful memories of that country down there. We have Lake life now with less acreage, of course, but I think I’ve influenced even my kids with that Love of farm life - both son and daughter have voiced they’d want a farm.

Yeah, that is always what I've done in the past, turn it on at 0. And I would have this year too if we didn't have this 1 cold day out of no where, and 2 girls mid molt. It is warming up tonight, so will be turned off, not to come on again till the next 0.

That is a wonderful story of farm life on those beautiful southern hills btc, really paints a lovely picture.
