Surviving Minnesota!

Good Morning,
I am sad to report that I had only 1 of 8 hatch over the weekend. He is a buff orp. I had 6 quitters and 1 clear that some how made it past day 18 candling. I was looking forward to a toad cross. I guess I will keep my fingers crossed as I have been getting 1 toad egg a day from the 3 ladies.

My RIR and Buckeyes are on strike....they have not given me an egg in 30 days. So I gave them lots of protein treats, and a lamp that is off only 8 hours a day. I noted that 1 of the RIR comb is half pink half red. Maybe it is a sign.

The Buff Orp girls are laying but it is an adult easter egg hunt to find their eggs as they don't like the nest boxes.

All is calm in the layer pen because my Mom sent 5 roosters to an eternal life in the frozen tundra. (Truthfully, only 2 were in with the layers the other 3 already were serving a life sentence in cages due to their behavior issues.)

The shed (Coop expansion) is nearly complete....this has been one heck of a long ride. Plywood is completely installed on ceiling and walls. Electrical is about 3/4 done but we are just grateful the electrician can come sit on a chair and dictate as she broke her hand a month ago. Next up, blowing insulation in the ceiling and building the hatch room.

Tata for now!

Hatching this time of year is so hard!

I will start saving eggs next weekend (10 days from now) and incubating in three weeks or so. I hope. i want some early chicks. BUT I know how the odds of that go... At the rate the girls are giving me eggs, I will have 5 eggs to incubate.

Sorry about that. How are you housing chicks this time of year??

Good Morning Chickeners . . . .
Wow! This is quiet on here! What has happened to each of us? We used to be posting al l l l l the time and al l l l l day long. I think there were a few kudos for all the posting we did on this thread.
I got the leaves blown off the driveway after dark and in the mist last night. The DH is up in Aitkin as the building is suppose to have begun this morning. I think he just wants to make sure it gets off on the right foot. I have gotten a bunch of stuff done inside (of course) this morning.
I am seriously going to send three birds to freezer camp and put the remaining all in one coop for the winter. Then I don't have to worry about frozen water and I figure they will be that much warmer. Feeling pretty detached from the flock right now. Maybe, after this year number 3, I am getting used to the idea of culling. Its a good idea to get used to.
Thanksgiving Day is only eight days away.
NOW tell me what you are doing and whats on your mind. Please . . . .

For the first 3 weeks of their life, they are living in a tote in my spare bathroom, in which I turn up the heat to 75 degrees and they have a chick mat heater under half of the wood chips. Once they are 3 weeks old they get kicked out to the coop. In the coop I have 2nd level in the insulated area that is 3 feet high by 4 foot by 8 foot and this is wrapped with silver reflective wrap and they have another chick heater mat. It works.....not ideal yet. I would love for some larger hatches to make this work better.

I think your area is great! We all have to do what works for us. Nothing wrong with what you do. It's super as our your birds.
