Surviving Minnesota!

Hey all... What do y'all feed your breeder birds? I am currently feeding a 16% layer mixed with gamebird feed cracked corn and bird feed. I do two scoops of gamebird and layer and 1/2-3/4 cup of bird feed and cracked corn...

Next time I buy feed I am going to figure out what it costs to feed my birds a day...

I have went CHEAP... I buy the Calf Concentrate at Fleetfarm. It has the vitamins and minerals the birds need as best as I can tell.

It is 32 % protein, I mix it with 4 parts of cracked corn. That gives me a final protein of around 13.8. And it costs $26 for 250# of mixed feed. or $5.25 a 50 pound bag.

I do feed free will grit and oyster shells free will on the side.

I am thinking of going a little cheaper too... But I was told by an older breeder at Hutch that you get out what you put in... idk...

We feed 18% layer. topped with calf mañana . I would guess about 10% calf mañana .

Do you still mix your own feed?

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas! May your Christmas dreams come true and May all your presents look nicer than the one my husband is giving his godson.

While there maybe something to this. I am not so sure. The birds all seem to be doing good. I am giving them a protein, vitamin and mineral ration close to to what I was buying.

I have the top dressing showbird stuff if I needed it. I just don't see a need right now. I feed heavier corn every winter anyways because I like to give them the carbs in the cold.

Other than my breeders I have no birds laying eggs, so there is very little loss of anything there..

I remember about 40 years ago I took a dog to an old vet...He asked" Do you feed your dogs any table scraps?"

I said "No".

He asked "why not?"

I said "because they tell you it is not good for the dog".

His reply " who, the dog food company that's who"

Then he told me they will do just fine on table scraps and anything else you feed them. I am kind of leaning that way on my birds. They seem as plumb and healthy as normal even during the winter. I picked up a ton of them yesterday, and I only found one I consider skinny, I would be willing to bet it would be skinny no mater what. It is a shy, meek bird that spends way too much time hiding in the corner and away from other birds even.

Not a bird I will ever breed. So I am going to stay cheap. I have another 300 bushels of corn coming for the next year.
