Surviving Minnesota!

Another day of Chicken wrangling is coming to an end.....

EJB and Jerry, you two would be proud of me today. I had my Jan 5th hatch jumping into my lap tonight for the first time. A bunch of SS, a Dom and even a CLB. The CLB decided to stay and refused to get down. Wheat does wonders for motivating a chick.

I need to find a wheat farmer with wheat to spare.

I am not going to let some 13 year old girl with a friendly bird beat me at the fair this year with her overly friendly bird.

I let my girls out to wander the yard this afternoon, first time in months. It went good, I never saw the neighbor dog but heard it let out a loud WOOF once, it probably heard the scratching and rustling leaves in my yard. The girls loved it but I was a nervous wreck, wandering the area with a bug zapper racket and my dog in the yard with me for security. Needless to say they didn't want to go back in the run so I bribed them with the blueberries I was going to have for dessert tonight. They will sleep good tonight.

I am at the point of the year I like, I do not have to feed my free ranging birds. They come running to us expecting food, but their crops are all full of whatever they are eating. So no commercial feed for them....

Of course they got a couple pounds of wieners from the bottom of the freezer and giblets with freezer burn on them today. All the birds got wieners we had about 10 pounds we had bought for a family event and forgot we had...Ooooooops.

I wish they could be out for many hours a day but it just isn't safe anymore. Those frost bitten wieners sound hideous but I bet they went bonkers for them,

Some photos from my lunchtime run home to save Sadie. It was a glorious free range day for the girls and Junior.

Patsy Kline the Welsummer. She follows me around. I follow her around. I love her, and not just for her dark brown eggs. She's a talker. Maybe she's singing a song.

Miss Kitty Plopping her donation to this rainbow colored collection in the nest.

Pictured here to the left is the broody. Yep. Suntanning with Hattie here. While the eggs in the broody coop chill and which she has no intention to returning to. She smells like old rotten egg yolk and I'm about ready to throw in the towel with this lady. I really miss Dixie right now.

So I went to the broody coop to check the eggs to see if they've been chilled this whole time. Yep. But I was slightly encouraged that at least Pearl had asked Auntie Abigail to put in some babysitting at least. She did long enough to eat Pearl's wet food it appears.

When I got home, Pearl on Nest of preference in the coop. One egg from Abigail added to the broody clutch in the broody coop. And everybody else did tremendously on this beautiful spring day. I'm a lucky chicken lady. With a stubborn broody.

No turkey eggs today... Had one yesterday in a hollow log... I destroyed the log so who knows where she’s laying now...

I got a couple yesterday.

I have a few dozen in the incubator and one broody RP hen that is trying to hatch a golf ball. She lets me move her but that is coming to an end, I am afraid. She has entered the hissing stage. Next comes the beating on poor me stage.

She has laid about a half dozen eggs this year so I suppose she figures she has contributed enough for the year, Lazy bum.
