Surviving Minnesota!

Hi Minnesota people.

We have been working, boating when not working, and haying the lawn every six days with this heat and rain.

I think it’s difficult for me to get to l & m or fleet farm to get layena let alone source non GMO , organic feed. I wish you well on that. Eek . I will tell you that free range and some clean leftovers from your kitchen is a bonafide way to upscale feed. Along with Purina layer feed which my hens excel on they get our left over walleye, venison stews, the suckers and red horse my son speared this spring but forgot to smoke and was taking up valuable freezer space (ssshhh) ... etc etc.
I bought nutrena layer feed not long ago. Idk why I did... production did its summer dip about the same time but there’s something incomplete about that feed. Is it still bragging it’s vegetarian? I should look at the bag again.

Locally laid makes a fine mash that is non GMO corn mash but it is not organic. You can read their blog about why they chose that for their hens. Blue seal comes to mind as an upper end feed as well. Fresh Eggs Daily blogger amends her feed with natural additives for chicken health. She gives her recipe for it freely on her blog.

Thanks for the tips about the amendments to the feed. I like that blog a lot and she actually recommends Scratch and Peck as a base!

Wow! What breed are the white bantams? Rocks? I'm far from knowledgeable on shape, but those look very well balanced, and just beautiful in the backline/tail set. Especially the hen.
The hen is really good... Someone told the breeder he shouldn’t have sold her lol..

How come you are avoiding corn and soy if you don’t mind me asking?
I have a sensitivity to soy. I was getting nasty headaches and they completely disappeared when I cut out soy. Since I avoid it like the plague in my food, figured it’s prob a good idea not to give it to our chickens. Corn I am not totally against because I realize it provides energy and helps them put on some weight in the cold winter months. However, there is not a lot of nutrition in it and since we are going to all the effort to raise our own healthy birds, I’d prefer to give them the healthiest nutrition profile I can. Well, that is, the healthiest I can without spending our children’s college tuition on chicken feed
