Surviving Minnesota!

I have a sensitivity to soy. I was getting nasty headaches and they completely disappeared when I cut out soy. Since I avoid it like the plague in my food, figured it’s prob a good idea not to give it to our chickens. Corn I am not totally against because I realize it provides energy and helps them put on some weight in the cold winter months. However, there is not a lot of nutrition in it and since we are going to all the effort to raise our own healthy birds, I’d prefer to give them the healthiest nutrition profile I can. Well, that is, the healthiest I can without spending our children’s college tuition on chicken feed
I saw some fancy organic stuff for sale the other day. $20 for 40ish pounds!

We are humid/overcast today. peeks of blue. It might rain I think.

ChickMN I'm intrigued by nutrition for my birds. I think it makes a difference for them and their production. Let us know what you find out and source and are doing.

Right now I have hens producing at 4 years old, albeit not quite like the 1 year old New Hampshire who missed one day last month. (Her poor cloaca) But if I'm on a good feed roll with these spoiled birds of mine...they give back. I've looked at the Fresh Eggs Daily recipe a couple times. I'd probably have trouble sourcing the kelp or whatever seaweed stuff. Most would be on a UPS truck from Amazon I'm thinking to my boonie woodtick town.

Blueberries! Open Next Tuesday, July 17th!

Surprise! Since we opened back in the 1990’s,the berries weren't ready until the last week of July. Last year we opened on the 20th of July and this year we are going to open next Tuesday on the 17th! That’s a over a week earlier than than it has been in the past! If you can’t make the first day, don’t worry. There will be plenty more to come. Barring unforeseen circumstances the season usually lasts 2 weeks or so.

The price this year is $20.50 for a heaping 5 quart pailful. Please note that is not an ice-cream bucket. Icecream buckets used to be 5 quarts, but big business has shrunk those buckets to 4 or 4.5 quarts. We have 5 quart pails here for you to use.

The weather looks good for next week, so hope we see you soon.

Donna & Bruce

They are so good. Went up a dollar I see. We’ll have to make a plan Becky.

Will find the legitimate wild blueberries here. Although I do have some plants of my own, the wild ones do have superior flavor I believe.
With adequate moisture this year there should be a good crop.
Early morning storms here with much lightning and thunder. We only got about 6/10s of an inch of rain, but we are not short of moisture.
Chickens love to free range even if it is raining.

I saw a lot of plants on the road into the cabin last week, but no berries. I think we need a good forest fire and maybe require the Sasquatches to stop eating them all.

Good morning, I am going out to release the flock to free range. It will be hot and humid here so early cool part of the day they aggressively forage for forbs and bugs and later hide in the shade.
Hope all have a good and productive day.
