Surviving Minnesota!

With the strange up and down weather my hatches have been abysmal. The last batch we're all shrink wrapped. I managed to assist several and had to bathe one it was so badly sticky and stuck. I seem to have a hen going broody though. If she's serious I'm happy to let her do the work.

Hopefully we get the garden turned over this weekend. It's been dry this week, so barring any rain, progress.

We had a shock to our community last week and I'll be going to a memorial service today, along with my kids and most of the school. A boy I knew well and watched grow up committed suicide. His younger brother is Dolly's best friend. It's going to be a hard day. I'm already emotional.
I feel you pain. :hugs

Just as I was about to head for bed, the post office called. Around 11:00 p.m. So I headed to town... around an hour’s drive. Got them all home safe... SO cute! I’d post a picture, but they’re hiding out under the mama hen heating pads at the moment. The little chicks are soooo tiny. Smaller by a lot than the ones I hatched (when they hatched). I didn’t buy bantams, but they look like bantam size.

I separated them into two bins since my geese are STILL in the stock tank because it’s STILL too cold to move them outside. Maybe later today I can put them outside at least for an hour or so. It’s 49 degrees but the wind is blowing.

The poults were drinking, but only pecking disconsolately at the pine shavings (coarse) and ignoring the food dish even though I tried pushing their little noses in there. The chicks, in their own bin, immediately attacked food and water (I did put their beaks in the water but they found the food all on their own.) So I put a handful of chicks in with the poults and everyone is eating now. The poults are kind of peckish—pecking though. I grabbed out three of the chicks and put them back with their brethren. One was from Runnings and a little bigger so I think I’ll leave her there for a while. She’s smaller than her former bin-mates but about the same size as the poults. There may be a couple more itty-bitties in there, under the mama hen. I think I’ll get them out when I see them. They’ve done their job.

Since it is neither freezing nor raining/snowing for a few minutes, I guess I’m gonna try to start on my second chicken tractor. Wish me weather luck...
