Surviving Minnesota!

Ralphie, I sent you a pm, and by the way I love that lamp in the picture on your profile page.

TY.. I love the guy looking under the oven. Turkeys are way smarter than most people give them credit for..

Yesterday, with Penguin and Ginger gone my Toms were feeling their oats, trying to move up the pecking order because of the new holes in it.

When I was putting them away yesterday afternoon, some of the hens fell behind the group. I circled back to get them, out of the corner of my eye I thought I saw a young blue Tom make a jump at me ( A sure way to become a camp counselor at freezer camp). When I turned to look more directly at him he was acting perfect. As soon as they got into the pen, my head turkey JJ beat the living poop out of him!

JJ has done this before, When a Tom challenges me JJ puts them back in line. It is just like Sidekick does when a Tom takes a swipe at JJ. Sidekick puts them back inline not JJ. I think the one below puts them inline so they do not lose their spot in the pecking order.

I never challenge the other turkey Tom, I Simply make sure JJ knows I am his boss and life is great.

I think everyone needs turkeys, they are way more enjoyable than chickens.

Ralph...you are so right. Turkeys are too much fun! Those of us on the turkey thread would keep our turkeys, over our chickens, if we had to choose. They bond so strongly with humans. Nothing like a lap turkey!!

My 4 wheel drive actuator is acting up . Stuck in 4 wheel drive . It did it awhile back when it was really cold but then worked when it got warmer . So repairs are needed .

Good Morning because it still is. Again, walked the dogs and it is beautiful outside. My two-year old lab did wonderful with voice-commands this morning. She was not listening to her collar - one beep means wait; two beeps means come. I discovered that it needs to be turned on for her to hear it. LOL. She did really well.

Memphis: thanks for sharing with us. We know about ice under that snow and it is dan ger ous. In Memphis or in Minnesota. Snow probably does not bother us that much. Kind of like it. If it is snowing it is usually warmer.

My hens are adjusting to the original nesting boxes. Two laid in them this a.m. one laid in the run. That will change soonly. Of course there are no heat lamps in the coop now. I am not anticipating anymore of the cold - cold stuff. Wishful thinking. But I am a rose-colored glass kind of person.

Turkeys huh? Hmmmmmm. I do want four more hens this spring. Ralphie, do you have me on your list or should I be looking elsewhere? Two or Three BA and one ISA or two and two. DH isn't going to be smiling at me when I can start digging the ground to lay another portion of foundation to expand that run.

I decided I could pull the original coop apart to 'clean' it again and then, by the way. . . . while its out of there a coop would be just perfect like this. That way, the original coop could be come a 2nd for the chicks to acclimate to the outdoors before going into the main coop. I have plans. LOL.

Does anyone have experience with burning off pastures? Since we are considering raising pigs on the back pasture that is grown almost waist high I am thinking I might burn it off this spring. That would also open it up for more space for the chickens to roam back there. I have been reading up on it and probably will see if the local extension office has anything to offer but if anyone has experience to share....

Hey Klops - not that I know anything about burning off pastures - just wanted to say good for you on your recent purchase. Piece by piece we learn to do a little more than before. So fun to listen to you and this new adventure.

What kind of truck? Hopefully it isn't one with vacuum actuated 4x4 as those can either be simple or the most difficult to solve. no grey area haha

You are on the list, people on here move to the front of the family and friends list..

Is there a difference between poultry dust and Sevin dust? I want to dust my chickens to prevent mites (less natural dusting opportunities in the winter here) but don't cant find poultry dust around here.
