Surviving Minnesota!

Hello! Introducing myself -- a suggestion from @CindyinSD. My name is Kim and while we have a house in Prior Lake, MN we have an apple/fruit orchard and a HUGE garden in Spooner, WI which is where we spend most of our time. I'm new to chickens - purchased 12 from Meyer Hatchery back in late January for delivery April 1 - they are all doing wonderfully! (Yes, a few bouts of pasty butt, diarrhea, and a bum leg for a bit but otherwise all are thriving): Jersey Giant ("Black Betty"); Barnevelder ("Henrietta"); Buff Orpington ("Pancake"); Lavender Orpington ("Lilac"); Black/Blue Splash Orpington ("Eggatha"); Cream Legbar ("Hen Solo"); Rhode Island Red ("Scarlett"); Austra White ("Sally"); Barred Rock ("Oreo"); Easter Egger ("Mel"); Olive Egger ("Picholine" - French for Olive); Light Brahma ("Freebie" - the free one they put in the box). We bought a pre-fab coop that is ready; putting up the run this weekend. It's been such joy to watch them (while I drink wine or coffee, or eat my lunch, or take work calls, or ...):wee :love

Hi..

glad your here.

Welcome AppleMomma65. show us your pre-fab. I'm a coop junkie.... Love Poultry architecture.

ejtrout I like your style with the 84 pictures of chicks. Might sound like somebody I know.... ahem. Birds of a feather....

After the chickens roost, the deer hit the lawn browsing the green grass shooting up. So wonderful to see them out there too.
With the kids home and having Ornithology class (which they are acing-probably due to birds and behaviors close to home for 8 years) we decided to feed the wild birds with a new feeder of sunflowers and oranges and grape jelly for my orange friends, the orioles (any body in banana region see them yet?) along with chickadees and nuthatches and purple finches have been the juncoes. the juncoes love my rubber feed bowls and defacating in them also. So not only the deer ...now juncoes are on my poo list. Grandpa's metal treadle feeders are starting to look better all the time. pocket book is feeling less squeaky.
