Surviving Minnesota!

Rhetts...we developed a system to classify turkey temperament.

Lapper = Lap Turkey. A turkey that seeks out human contact. Sitting on laps is a common trait.

Tolerant Turkey = Tolerates human contact but doesn't seek it out. You can pick them up easily.

Lurkey Turkey = A turkey that follows you around, or hangs out with you, but doesn't like to be touched

Bellybutton = Ya'll know what that means!

We regularly refer to turkeys like that.

I have only 2 turkeys they both are Lurkey Turkeys but one of them is the biggest Bellybutton I have ever encountered!! He is so going to be dinner very soon!!

I have Speckled Sussex, Double Lace Barnevelders & Australorps. Over the past few years I've lost my older EE'S and will probably replace them this spring.

I have Blue Slate and Bourbon Red turkey hens. They are all Lappers.

This is Daisy asleep in my lap.

I had a bourbon red. He was so beautiful. I can't believe how peaceful she looks! That just seems so crazy to me to have a turkey want human affection. Mine are SO not that way at all!! LOL!

Ralph it probably wasn't in a good mood after being trapped!

Rhetts...that's been the biggest surprise, how strongly turkeys bond with people. And how they seek out attention. They will also play...mine like soccer. They are also capable of learning....I have one hen that I can get through some of the dog agility equipment.

Ralph's Ginger just went to a new home and the guy says he's already a lapper.

Daisy looks relaxed because she's asleep!

I love Bourbons too. This is Annie, my hen with a beard! Just posting this pic because it scares Ralph!

Here is my tom from last winter. I lost him this November to the wolf we had coming around. I would like to get some Bourbons in the future. I really liked him.

Ralphie, the cat should be dispatched with in one way or another. Do you not suspect it to have been the predator which caused your recent loss?

Somehow, technology has failed me and the quote is not on the top...... I know, I posted these before, just reposted them so you could refer to them again..

I can't understand why she would be so dang swollen back there.  She seems so uncomfortable.  Up and down and licking all the time.  I wish I could help some how.

I               L O V E                     S N O W!!!!!!!!!!  Freshly fallen snow with out a track in it is SO beautiful.  But I do love seeing the kids' boot prints and tracks all over the yard too.  :)

Well I'm out of ovations to give now too. Rhett's I think you had at least 2 coming and Memphis...

It's a big basketball week. 4 nights out of 5. I'll keep up best I can.

Yeah I don't know Rhett's if you start to get a vet into the picture after more than a week of labor or what. Sounds like there are new things that indicate progress though. That behind is dramatic though isn't it?

A cow and calf is worth so much money I would get a vet involved a lot sooner than other animals ( other than a dog). For a chicken I would never do it, there is some kind of risk/reward/outcome ratio each person has to find for themselves.

With this one you run the risk of looking foolish to the vet if you go too soon and being out a couple hundred, I bet. I have no idea what Vet visits cost.

The risk of losing the cow and calf if something is wrong.

Having the vet not be able to do anything and lose them anyways, plus out vet fees.

It is a tough call. I sure understand Rhetts dilemma. Hopefully she will tell us soon all is well and she has a cute little calf.
