Surviving Minnesota!

Good Morning

Holms - wouldn't it be wonderful if all our problem foxes (and other predators) just went on their way to other hunting grounds? What a great way to solve a problem. Wishful Thinking - LOL.

Ralphie - way to hang in there incubating those eggs. Its good to hope because it all may turn out good. Little gippers - stupid incubator. What is that mama heater thing really called? So I can look it up. Perhaps I want one for when I bring my little SS home.

Feed the chickens some scrambled eggs this morning. They loved it of course. Thanks for the idea fellow chickie friends. It seems almost balmy out there today. Maybe the dogs will get a walk today.

Glad they r doing well!! When r the Highlands due?

Thanks!!
Well, exactly on the highlands we don't know. I think we estimated March but that is when they delivered last year so wouldn't that mean February if the previous owners bred back right away (which I think they did)? I really don't know but am checking them off and on to see how they look. Of course the highlands are old bags (at least 13 years old!!) so I am not sure how much pre labor stuff I will see since they have been delivering for ages.

Our highland, Norma Jean, the white ish colored one I have posted pics of, might have her first calf in June I think. When we bought her in November the owner said the bull had been chasing her in August and had since let her be. So I am only assuming she is pregnant. She was 20 months old when we got her then. The bull he has is a mini highland. I am so hoping she is pregnant!! I can only imagine how cute that calf would look!!

Awesome!! Usually cows dont go into heat until a month after they have had their calf. Holy cats!! They r pretty old! But they have another 7-8 years left in them! As long as a cow is standing it can have a calf. At least thats what the vet said...

That can happen in snakes too! I read about a snake that has done it several times at a university. I will have to look for that article I read....

Here it is!

Very interesting stuff indeed

I knew it could happen in lower animals (reptiles and amphibians). I did not know it could happen in warm blooded animals.

What I find amazing is it would never work in mammals, as the sex gene is on the male gamete. All the offspring would be female and that would not solve the no Daddy problem. With birds the sex gene is on the females side, so you get a ZZ (female) as opposed to a XX (female) in mammals.

Yeah he seems to be doing well. At first there was some nursing issues. He wasn't drinking off the 2 front teats. She had gotten very engorged so they milked them down and now all seem to be going well. They both look like happy, bouncing calves!!

I didn't realize how much I liked cows until we had them. Now I don't want to be without!! I love them!!

You could take Klop up on his offer for boarding your cows. Then Judy won't have calves in her living room should they need some TLC.
