Surviving Minnesota!

I am really hoping to get a white with chick down like the pale chick in front for auto sexing . I have hatched one of these before but forget what the adult color was . I think it may have been white but coons broke in and got it .

The white sports would just be white Legbar .

Not sure on that white chick . I have to get some but seller changed her mind .

Ralphie you need a black Ameraucana rooster for your black EE project . I have extras . So you are not in Duluth ? I pass through Duluth is why I ask .

I put a cockerel into the Legbar pen hoping a recessive white might pop up . The original cock has not produced any . Hoping one of the hens carried white .

Down to 3 Legbar hens / pullet . Such poor repoducers .Have had them 2 or going on three years . That is why I am improving them .
I will add recessive white Ameraucana to my EE project if needed to toy with the white idea . Have to wait and see what the 2 pale chicks are .

Ralph those are cute chicks!

I hate myself... Last night I had to mark air cells on my eggs... Something bad happened... I was going to pick up the last egg... It was an Aussie egg that I was super excited to get a chick from... Well the egg was like slippery and I dropped it

I am so mad at myself! There was a little black chick in there which made it worse! I am so mad at myself! I am not touching eggs in the incubator again unless I am turning them or candling on day 14!

The parent/Grandparent trait in me is firing on all 8 cylinders right now. I am trying to resist saying, "I told you so".

Now I need to ask, Why do you candle on day 14? If you stop turning them or move them to a hatcher as I do no day 18, why not just candle then? If you are using fresh eggs when they go into the incubator the chances of an explosion are slim. I have only had an explosion on eggs I bought and they obviously were not fresh!..

If you have the room I see no gain in candling before day 18. That said if I need room, I will candle without touching the eggs on the day I need the room.. I wait until after dark and simply put a light to the top of the egg, I can pick the obviously bad ones out, the maybes do not matter.

Note,, I DID not say I told you so, I resisted....

And further note, my biggest fear is dropping eggs when I move them from the incubator to the hatcher.

I have one Buckeye Holm. She's a beast. She weights 7 or 8 lbs and she eats like that too. So excellent dual purpose. She has not laid eggs for me since last spring so I suspect the Fallopian tube infection with her. ugh... But here she is. She's a gorgeous hen. huge. Little feisty on the roost...but I think others have picked on her too.
She is beautiful!!! I cant wait! Thanks for the pictures!

The difference should be the crest and the recessive white with the blue eggs, shouldn't it?

I am no longer in Duluth. I live NW of the cities about 40-45 miles. To get things to and from you I would just take a drive to you in Longville....

I would be interested in a black Ameraucana rooster. I like the look of black birds, If I could cross my BA/EE back to that I should get a bird I would really love. If my guess is correct The EE/BA should give me a larger bird, crossing the black Ameraucana back into it should help egg color and mitigate the single comb of the BA. I will not breed single combs in F2 or 3.

I heard a little purr and soft cluck this morning as I left the coop after morning chores and opening the pop door. I turned to find my only egg layer following me back up towards the house. Lucy.

This was her Destination. The Free Range Nest Box. Almost a Football field's distance from the Coop. Through New Snow. She Pecked along and pecked along.

The Food Lady did concede and provide Transport due to Icy and Snow Conditions on the Snow Path. Not knowing how pressing the Egg Matter was.

In She Goes and is still is as I type this.

Thank you Bogtown, I love your stories and she is a beautiful hen. Aren't we blessed that we have chosen to live as we do?

I am scared of an explosion... I had an explosion once... I was candling eggs under a broody duck... I couldnt figure out why she kept kicking out the same three eggs so I candled them and they were dead so I tapped one on the edge of a bucket and poof... I thought I was going to die. The smell... It was so gross. I smelt that for three days... If that happened in our house... U would never hear from me again... But I am taking your advice. No more candling till day 18

I am sorry Holm, but the picture of you in the state of near puking after breaking the egg on the bucket has brought tears of laughter to my eyes!!!
