Surviving Minnesota!

Well..not the kind I showed a picture of yesterday...

I found another 1202, Which actually makes sense because I bought extra egg trays, heating filament and a fan for it incase the one I have fails.  I also have the spare parts EJB gave me and a new electronic thermostat if I want to change out the front wafer.

Besides there is no way I can fill up two 1202's......

Thays awesome! I am sure u will be able to fill it once your turkeys are laying alot!

I am going to want around 5 welsummers , maybe even 6, 2 roosters and 4 hens. And without trying to sound snobbish, I was going to get show quality birds and not hatchery...( dang that sounds snobbish to me even)

I have EE up the ying yang and am hatching several every week. I have a line on some Welsummers from Whitmore Farms. They look like good birds but then they could be lying to me too.
Well here is some info for you on hatchery sources . At one time Halbach Poultry was selling eggs to McMurry . This was 30+ years ago . They were buying EE / Ameraucana eggs that Halbach was buying from Wayne Meridith . Still in the development of LF Ameraucana . Not sure what else they were supplying . Yes the same family with APA president and judges at the time . So not always junk . I am sure they were not his best . Windsor MO. use to have 3 mail order hatcheries . They contracted locals to raise breeders and supply eggs . If the breed did not sell the breeder lost money not the hatchery .

I am hatching in the foam ones right now.

I am thinking of building a hatcher for next year. I will use the second 1202 for incubation, unless it works better for a hatcher at the time. It will just give me some flexibility I do not have now. I have sold 3 dozen creamette eggs in the last couple weeks because I was without incubator space. I hate doing that when I have people still waiting for Creamettes.

While I have some Ed babies, I do not have a lot, for every good egg I get from him I get 6 bad ones. I am getting frustrated by this. I am thinking the first 8x40ish run I get made will be his. Maybe he is not getting enough sun. I may have to install a tanning bed for him.

Ok, Now I am confused...

Explain this all to me slowly. So hatchery chickens are not just run of the mill maybe what they say with some leghorn in the wood pile to increase egg production?

I was under the impression, hatchery birds were not pure or show quality because they were crossed to get better production or feed conversion and so on. Now I will admit I got that from here on BYC,...

And I have seen a few myths perpetuated on here.

I am not unhappy with any of my hatchery stuff, but people are always asking if it is hatchery lines or not when they ask about buying chicks.

There is a lot of misinformation out there . Production birds are just that . The rarer stuff often comes from good breeders . Maybe passed to a local breeder for multiplying . Without constant selection quality goes down . Still good ones will pop up . People just do not understand that production white Leghorn or RIR are not bred to the standard . They are not show stock .

Ok, That's what I thought. I thought I was making an error. When buying chicks or eggs it is kind of a pig in a poke thing. You have no way really to tell what the final bird will be right?

But your odds increase as you get closer to a good breeders stock, isn't that correct?

Yes . Here is another one . Cackle now sells black Ameraucana . They got their start last year from John Blehm . Longtime friend and club member . Current Ameraucana Alliance president .

Cool..

Do you know anything about Duane Urch's business?

EJB said he had good dominques. I have been trying to find info on his birds and eggs and cannot find anything other than a phone number on the APA site. I hate to just call that without knowing if he wants people too or not. The number was on a judge list.
