I would like the chantecler chickens and buckeyes too so Ralphie you need to get some Buckeyes and hatch those eggs too. No big deal what is one more breeding pen? And you did get that nice big incubator from EJB so you should really fill it up and use it.....................just sayin...................
 
I have one buckeye hen. She is a hefty 8 pound bird. She eats like it too. She laid well through the spring nice light brown cream eggs with dapples. Hoped for her to do a short stint in the fall but was disappointed that she didn't. She is probably the only unfriendly buckeye on earth. I got her as a 2 week chick from a classroom hatch at the school. I don't think she started out her socialization well. Lol. And I probably didn't spend the time I did with my first birds. Right now she is looking more attractive as a meat bird to me. Lol. Come spring if there are no eggs... She'll be gone. No eggs - not thrifty with feed- no brainer.
 
I do not make an effort to socialize with my birds. Their temperament is not tampered with. I do bring them things to eat which endears me to them. The Buckeyes have in my experience been the most docile and social to humans. Chanteclers are very calm, Welsummers and EEs not so much. Marans have been a calm breed also, and there are more I have had but I can't go on forever here.

Ralphie, don't let Judy know that the Buckeye has the distinction as the only breed completely developed by a woman, as that may endear them to her.

Everyone says this, which could be a reason I will resist them.

I do not socialize with my chickens as much as most people. Most of my chickens do not like to be touched, matter of fact I cannot think of one that does. They like me the way kids like coke machines. I have an EE I named Muffin that is very docile she is first in line when we sit down for chicken TV.

Now my turkeys are a different story. I socialize with JJ and Ethel all the time. If I want a bird to hold they are the two. My turkeys are our buddies. They are like dogs, they seem to socialize with people easier than chickens. I know they are both flock animals. But turkeys have a more ridged caste system. They follow me 90% of the time. I do not need feed to get them to follow me. The moral of this long tale is EVERYONE Should have a turkey!


You can always go on and on here, it is expected. I need longer posts at coffee time not shorter ones.. Even on the roost the 2 PC's are different temperaments. One lets me touch her the other shrieks and jumps away. Ed tolerates a touch but lets me know it is unwelcome touch.


I glanced at the thermometers and then went to the Keurig. I pushed the button and went back to the thermometer. I had to check and make sure that 20 degrees really was above! And it was.. what a great day this is starting out to be.
