Surviving Minnesota!

OMG ... Am I suppose to be giving grit to the babies already??? I didn't know.. I've had them on the Manna Pro organic starter crumbles Non GMO non medicated.. I have some grit but it looks to big for them to eat.. Should I go dig up some of our wonderful Sand that we have for dirt and warm it up then let them have that or where do I find baby grit? TSC in ER only has big grit.,

The last time I bought grit I bought driveway granite chips, to use for my "base" in the brooder. I dumped some chick grit in and I could not tell the difference. Except for the 50# for $4 on the driveway chips and $9 for 5 pounds on the chick grit. Your babies are two weeks old, I think they need grit, others might disagree. It works for me.

I buy gravel for my adult birds because of the fine sand I have here, they would spend a week trying to find enough small rocks to fill their gizzards.

Good Morning!

No blizzard here today, we have high winds and it is bitter cold, but no snow. I can not give you an exact temp, as my indoor outdoor thermometer, outdoor probe battery decided to take a crap last night. The old mechanical one is showing about 0.

I am going to be building a mama hen whatever Blooie calls her heating pan cave thingy today. I got one of those always on heating pads. Judy was not impressed with my plans. I tried explaining I could do away with heating lights, and they should be cheaper to run. Still not impressed. She says the heating lights work fine.

I may have to divorce her over this. I can't wait to collect Alimony from her so I can buy more heating pads!

I still have not decided what to do with Bert Jr. and his girls.

Did I tell you I got an egg finally from the British gals? I was outside with Bert Jr and I heard the egg song from the British gals. I think it is a pullet egg, it is small and kind of pointy, but I have not had a SS egg to compare it too. Aussiegal how old are my SS gals? Were they laying when I got them or not?

They look old but I just have no idea.

I thought about what was said by Dexters, I guess to me, the money for them is not as important as the novelty of having them, their small size is so cool. I would buy a bred cow or three when and if I get some. Then a bull later on for the hard work of being a Calf Daddy.

And I still want a donkey or mule, but again Judy is not enthralled with the idea. She also quashed my goat dreams!
I am really going to enjoy spending the alimony money I get from her on them!

Use sand for baby grit the finer sand is better but crumbles are easy to digest so I do not give the small chicks grit . IMO it is a mistake to not use medicated chick starter . If you ever get cocci in them it will wipe them out before you can stop it .

I do not use the medicated feed, BUT I know I could lose them all if Cocci gets started. I do it though because I want a chemical free bird. BUT if I lose them I know it is my fault...

BUT you are right if a person cannot accept the risk they should use the medicated feed. It drives my 85 year old Mother nuts when I refuse to use the medicated stuff...

However, I keep medications on hand, just incase, but so far, I have not had to use it. BUT prevention is way easier than defeating it. ( yeah, I want my cake and to eat it too)

Good morning! I thought it was only men that knew how to say no and consider it a compromise. I simply must meet Judy so I can learn from her about my DH toys. Chickens, Coops, and Runs are IMPORTANT!
