Surviving Minnesota!

Mine did,

but we are having a small mini blizzard right now...

Nathan I forgot the mention the most important reason to not have ducks,,,

I would no longer be able to give Holm a rash of poop over ducks... Owning ducks is worth a few bucks..

Continuing to tease him is priceless..

I just do not have the right place for waterfowl. I have no water source. I already have enough coops and pens to make my wife question my actions. BTW I did try a fence with the geese. They simply stuck their heads under the fence and lifted their way under it.

I also do not like the wet mess they make. With the turkeys and chickens I do not need them keeping a place wet enough for earthworms to find a place to live.

My DW hated the geese worse than I did. If I had kept them she would have went on strike until all birds were gone. Sometimes I need to keep the war department happy here at home.

I like duck and geese stuffed with sauerkraut and roasted.
"They simply stuck their heads under the fence and lifted their way under it" Sounds like somebody got outsmarted?

Why did your wife hate them?

Holm & Nathan....sadly I have to agree with Ralphie on the duck/goose debate. After owning ducks/geese/turkeys/chickens.....I much prefer my sweet turkeys!!!

I have nothing against turkeys, and I think they would be fun to have. BUT geese and ducks are even better!

Your reasoning in impeccable, ralphie!

Thank you.

Our mini-bliazzrd is over. but it left a coat of slippery ice/snow on everything. It has dropped 15 degrees in the last hour.

I just moved my last eggs from the Styrofoam incubators into the hatcher. NOT doing good. I have one toad egg, that I am scratching my head on how it got in the incubator. I am thinking Judy is playing mind games on me. It is a very dark brown egg. Toads have light brown eggs. It has a viable embryo in it. The light brown Toad eggs are all clear. I am thinking Bert is no good.

I am tempted to put Ed in that pen for a few days and see if the eggs are good then. I guess a CX partridge chanticleer would not be the worse meat bird in the world. Maybe put him in for a few days to get me a few eggs and see what the chicks are like. Maybe it is not warm enough or the days long enough even with added light for Bert to be any good.

Thoughts? All 7 cx eggs are clear.

The creamettes are doing better but not much this round. 13 good eggs. Hopefully they will all hatch.

I have a 14th creamette egg I hold out no hope for. It has an air sac on the side (saddle sac). It looks viable but time will tell. This is the batch the thermometers went high on so who knows?

My next batch of eggs come from the 1202, so I am excited to see what they do. It is amazing how tight that holds the temps!

Hatch date on the ones in the hatcher is Wednesday. the 10th.

I have 20 creamettes for the 20th in the 1202, all but 4 look good. 3 clears and a quitter. 4 of Bert's toad eggs, all clears...

Dang Bert!

And the mini blizzard is back.

Nathan You should get one turkey just to see.

It was so nice this afternoon, I went into the Nunnery and Ethel talked to me for a while then I held her for 15-20 minutes as I talked and petted her. She just cooed and closed her eyes almost falling asleep. I keep saying they are like feathered dogs, they really are. Even the ones I do not hold or monkey with follow me everywhere.

The other day when I was plowing snow on the ATV they (the toms, as the Hens are all in the nunnery) followed me standing around watching me plow for a good 20 minutes. Making sure I got it right they would gobble just to let me know I could do better. Then they went and sat on the fence for a good hour to see how long I was going to keep the plowing up.

I dare you to hold a duck or goose on your lap for 20 minutes and not have a wet/dirt glob on your pants.

Ralph is right Nathan. Until you own a lapper you have no idea how wonderful pets turkeys can be. Here is Daisy sound asleep on my lap.

BC Nothing sounds fun when it has the words "five mile run" in it. My poor knees would crumple over and leave me in a heap along the trail...BUT I use to love X-C skiing.. years ago.. 2 things happened today that were amazing. (yesterday),,, Judy posted a picture she took of that eagle in the tree waiting to pounce on the chickens. Our daughter wrote back "cool" on the picture. My DW replied. "NO NOT COOL when he is sitting there waiting to eat my chickens" She actually called them her chickens! That is a first. Then I fell asleep watching TV with her, which is normal. I woke up to noise in the dining room, Judy was taking a video of the chicks hatching and just giggling like a school girl telling her weekend exploits on Monday morning.. First she took this picture, which she thinks is so cute,, Followed by this video: She says they were helping the newbie into the world I did not see that... Coffee, I have a great new idea how you could have an eye candy rooster and the personality you want in him,,, What time do you want me to drop him off at. He will not crow for months....all you need is heating pad or light and some chick starter... (The males are not all sold just all the females)
Awesome video Ralphie! Thanks for sharing. Loos like some awesome chicks!!

Good evening ya all. Lottsa chatter out here. New people too. welcome new chickie raisers. And welcome to experience chickie raisers along with the ducks and turkeys. Very interesting.
I had the wonderful opportunity of driving to Zimmerman to pick up my DH after he and my Ds went to Detroit Lakes to ice fish. Sorry Ralphie - they are being rather exclusive but its not about you. i was sitting in the Holiday parking space when the storm front came through. Very interesting to see it all unfold. Car is in the garage for the next couple days. They used my DS new ice castle for the first time. Actually, there were three ice castles fishing (?) together. The friends in the other two ice castles, along with my DH made plans to christen the brand new ice castle. My DH was putting up some fishing apparatus that my DS had not installed properly and my DS warned him about screwing it in properly (remember, my DH is a general contractor) so it did not project out the siding. So DH approached some of the friends to find out if they had a screw, they did, he told him his plan - to cut off the end of the screw and attache it to the outside of the ice castle. They loved it. DH could not stop laughing telling me the story. DS eventually took out a tool to cut off the projecting screw and of course it just fell off. DH said DS came into the ice castle asking him if he knew who had done this prank. DH said that yes he knew. Later the other friends put a fake dog doo on the floor. DS joyfully said he would clean it up right away and when he scooped it into a bag of course he discovered the ploy. Hmmmmm - did not see any baggies of fish to throw into the freezer.

THEE game is in the 2nd half; four quarters. Made Chimi's for dinner. Nummy salsa and a nummy guac dip. TJ Warren just picked up the ball after knocking it out of the hands of Cam Newton on the four-yard line.

Okay - read you in the morning. Sleep tight - wake loose.

I have a Bresse Rooster for you, @duluthralphie . They are supposed to be good meat birds. ;)
