Surviving Minnesota!

OK here is a thought on waiting time on switching rooster . I have said I remove and save for another week then add a new rooster and wait a week before saving . My friend John Blehm likes to say the daddy is the rooster who bred her yesterday . The reason being that a hen can store semen but last semen in is the first out or used . So the oldest semen expires without being used . You will get all kinds of opinions on this . I did my own test . I have kept setting eggs after removing the rooster . By day 10 fertility dropped and all clear at 14 days . Yes you can get fertility past that but it is rare . I do not trust the bullseye test on eating eggs . I go by development . So for me this works fine . I can usually tell any crosses at hatch . I will remove my white rooster from the black hens today . Getting ready for the next rooster . I will put the Erminett colored rooster in next . I can tell Erminett color at hatch . He will produce 50% Erminett color and 50% blacks from black hens . Blacks will go to the sale barn as EE .

Jerry, Thanks again, your expertise is priceless to me.

I have decided to go for it. The PC's have been in lock up since the end of January. The only roosters that would have mated with them are my PC, or my BA. The other two roosters are scared to death to try and take one of Ed's girls. Ed would never allow it either.

Ed (PC) has been in the pen since Sunday afternoon. Not a lot of time, but enough. I am pretty sure I will be able to tell a pure PC from a PC/BA mix. I want some BA/PC mixes so if I get them saves me having to make them later. Now a question on those mixes. The Cushion Comb would most likely show itself with the single comb in the background. If I understood you correctly.

So if I mate the offspring next year for Generation 2 I should have 50% Single comb and 50% cushion combs, correct?

If that is correct in G3 if I only mate the cushion comb ones I should have my 100% cushion comb BA/PC crosses in G4. a I correct?

Next on the EE I wanted to take some of the blue out of my EE's so whether the father is BA or PC it should do that, right? It would make no difference to me if the father was BA or PC other than the single comb I want to get rid of...?

Thanks again!

I am a Chicken OBGYN!!!

I saved that little guy I did the Eggsarian Section on. I Was afraid it would not get out of the membrane, It would bleed when I tried to remove anymore.

So I put a little olive oil on a damp paper towel and put it back in the incubator. About 4 hours later it was still stuck in the towel and membrane. I decided to just take the chance, so I unwrapped the towel, removed the rest of the egg and left her to her fate.

Look at her now!

I did an eggtopsy on the egg that did not hatch. I found this, Notice how big the air sac is in the side view. All I removed was the air sac area.

Ralphie yes on the comb . It is hard to hatch a egg that dries out faster than the rest . Lost of reasons for drying out fast . Too porous a crack that you did not see or even washing the bloom off a dirty egg .

I must have missed your post. Or just read past... It's been a hectic day. Anyways, my first logo design was a silhouette of a howling hound with notes just like you suggest but the base image of the dog is copyrighted and we can't figure out if we can get rights to use it or not and we haven't found any others we like. That's when we moved to this idea playing in the common image of a chicken on a pig on a cow or whatever.

Our cartons have our farm name, a photo of our chickens, a brief description of our eggs, then our names, address, phone, etc as required by law. Then we print out a sticker that goes on each carton directing them to our Facebook page (no dedicated site yet)
Isn't it cute! except the whole copyright issue and it being a boy dog haha

Is it a hound? Its gotta look like Dixie. Its the ears that don't say hound to me. And Hounds do howl or look like they are whistling. Cool. Take out the circle and change the ears and find out if the original copy right would mind. Probably not. You are not trying to steal their copyright. Or find someone that can draw it different for you with the same idea. And if that is going to happen the mouth needs to look whistling, not howling. LOL. By the time I get done harassing you - either you will throw your hands up and stay with the original art work or NEVER change the brand. Which is the idea anyway. In my mind your table is all set up. LOL again. I like to design houses also.

Not here it was great out. Water running everywhere. My drive is nearly dry. I want more days like this or better!!
EJB was right yesterday. Never saw 30. Had snow off and on all day. Today looked nice and sunny outside but the wind was incredibly cold. Not even 20 I don't think. Tonight another below 0 round but should start getting warmer after that. Must be nice to have a dry driveway. My place is still a winter wonderland.
