OK here is a thought on waiting time on switching rooster . I have said I remove and save for another week then add a new rooster and wait a week before saving . My friend John Blehm likes to say the daddy is the rooster who bred her yesterday . The reason being that a hen can store semen but last semen in is the first out or used . So the oldest semen expires without being used . You will get all kinds of opinions on this . I did my own test . I have kept setting eggs after removing the rooster . By day 10 fertility dropped and all clear at 14 days . Yes you can get fertility past that but it is rare . I do not trust the bullseye test on eating eggs . I go by development . So for me this works fine . I can usually tell any crosses at hatch . I will remove my white rooster from the black hens today . Getting ready for the next rooster . I will put the Erminett colored rooster in next . I can tell Erminett color at hatch . He will produce 50% Erminett color and 50% blacks from black hens . Blacks will go to the sale barn as EE .
Jerry, Thanks again, your expertise is priceless to me.
I have decided to go for it. The PC's have been in lock up since the end of January. The only roosters that would have mated with them are my PC, or my BA. The other two roosters are scared to death to try and take one of Ed's girls. Ed would never allow it either.
Ed (PC) has been in the pen since Sunday afternoon. Not a lot of time, but enough. I am pretty sure I will be able to tell a pure PC from a PC/BA mix. I want some BA/PC mixes so if I get them saves me having to make them later. Now a question on those mixes. The Cushion Comb would most likely show itself with the single comb in the background. If I understood you correctly.
So if I mate the offspring next year for Generation 2 I should have 50% Single comb and 50% cushion combs, correct?
If that is correct in G3 if I only mate the cushion comb ones I should have my 100% cushion comb BA/PC crosses in G4. a I correct?
Next on the EE I wanted to take some of the blue out of my EE's so whether the father is BA or PC it should do that, right? It would make no difference to me if the father was BA or PC other than the single comb I want to get rid of...?
Thanks again!
