Surviving Minnesota!

Ivie to me she looks bigger and stronger than when you got her. I am amazed you have even kept her going. Great job!..

And now on todays news. I just looked in the incubator, I have a white Cream Legbar that appears to be healthy! good legs and all!

I am not sure how many are in there yet or how many eggs are pipped. When I looked last there seemed to be a lot pipped. Time will tell.

I have been at my son's a lot this weekend.

The "other Grandpa" took a turn for the worse the other day. It saddens me to tell you he has passed. My Son and DIL have been spending a lot of time with him in the hospital.

I have been performing Grandpa duties. If you want to feel a heart string tug, just try explaining to a 4 year old why people die and have to go to heaven. I am hoping she remembers her other Grandpa when she is older. I even felt a little guilty as he laid dying I was enjoying snuggles and cuddles from our grand kids.

Not looking for condolences are anything, just letting you know we (we meaning DIL's family) can now start healing and getting a more normal life after 2 months of him being in the hospital. It will be different without him at family gatherings.
That is so very sad, he sounded like a wonderful man, and so young too, so very sorry for your Son and DIL.

Barbers are becoming a thing of the past it seems. Or maybe just for us here on the Range. DH used to go to the one on 4th in Virginia. DH much prefers barbers than a salon. Must be the man time hanging out and BSing while waiting around for your turn.
My DH goes to a Barber over in St. Francis, been going to him since high school i think...

for you Ralphie:

Pickled Northern recipe - (from a Swede

)
(Do not tell my family that I gave it too you, shhhh, it is a secret. Best. Pickled. Northern. Ever.)

1. Cut fish fillets into cubes and inch by inch (don’t worry about bones, they will soften in pickling process) and place into glass jar (gallon) or crockery. Cover with a brine (1/2 cup of pickling/canning salt to 1 qt of water) use enough brine to cover fish. Let stand in fridge for 48 hours.
2. Drain well but, do not rinse. Cover fish with white vinegar and let stand in fridge for 24hrs. Drain and throw away vinegar but, do not rinse.
3. Pack fish into jars and add thin slices of raw onion in alternating layers. Add enough pickling solution to cover fish and then cover jars and put into fridge. It is ready to eat in 3 days if you like it firm (bones will be softened) let stand longer if you like your fish “more” pickled.
Pickling solution:
4 c white vinegar
2 ½ c sugar
1 c Silver Satin wine (cannot get this anymore, so substitute Thunderbird wine - The American Classic)
¼ c pickling spice

Dissolve sugar in white vinegar and heat to boiling. Turn off heat and add Silver Satin wine and pickling spice. Add to jars to cover fish. Enjoy!

Now I just need a northern!

Jerry, those babies are so cute!

lvie, wow, I can't believe she is still kicking, great job!

I am really happy right now!! I candled my eggs in the incubator and hace development in 14 of 20 eggs!! Its only day 4 so more should develop. I know I shouldbt candle on day 4 but its my first hatch of the year and I couldnt resist!! All the cochin eggs are developing except for one bantam egg that could still start. I am definetly keeping any bantam cross pullets! The eggs r from my best mother hen so hopefully sge passes those traits down... But u know what that means if I keep pullets... I have to get rid of my roos... Probably Buckeye roos from Minnie and just keep the pullets from my Aussie cross project... I guess we will cross that bridge when we get there!

Oh and I started drivers ed tonight... Yay... I dont like that class but want my license so I guess I will have to deal with it...

Holms - once a wise person said to me - Its just the hoops you have to jump through to get where you want to go. We were talking about some of the prerequisites for college at that time - some are meaningless - however, I have found that there are many unnecessary hoops in life that take a person to the next place that they do actually want to be and apply to their lives. Just food for thought.

Well, I have mu concerns about SC today. Her eyes are bulging a little bit and I don't think she will make it. However, why would she go this long and not live? IDK. She is stronger tonight than I have ever seen her to be. This is kind of ridiculous. I feel good about it - and am curious if she does survive what she will be like. Maybe I could write a story about her - or a childrens book "The Little Chick that Could."

Good night ya all.

@holm25 how is the cow doing that was starting to bag up? Any more showing progress? One of the BILs highland has my curiosity piqued. Her bag looks different but not full of milk and her teats are thickening I think. I think they are due about now to March and they are really old so I figure they might not show much of any pre signs and just let the calf fall right out. LOL As quick as mine went with so little showing a head of time and it was her first I figure these old bags might be hard to catch.

@Coffee 1st how are your chicks doing? Any more losses? Any more big eggs? I love the picture you took of your egg carton made it look like you have about 20 eggs in that carton. I counted twice to see how many there were cause the angle makes it look like so much more than twelve. I thought "huh, what kind of carton did Coffee find" till I counted twelve eggs. :)

Ivie: you have the patience of Jobe. Good for you taking care of little SC. Doing what you can. Wouldn't that be something if she figures it out. But if she doesn't well we all know she got a fair shot at it.

I'm heading to bed. Night folks.
