Surviving Minnesota!

Ralphie those chicks are gorgeous. Love the one with them peaking out from the momma cave. They are so soft and fuzzy.

I thought FDA wanted egg washing? They must be making concessions about farm eggs, understanding bloom, etc.

When I looked up the Minnesota rules they said the preferred method was sand paper. Hence the scuffing.

Egg washing machines were a huge NoNo. I assume they worry a "little poorly edukated chicken Rancher" would not be able to keep the water warm enough or use the right disinfectant to kill the bad germs..

So I have a dumb question:

We were looking at the Mcmurray catalog discussing white leghorns and the laying ability. Obviously they don't have a comb for our kind of winter so I showed him the rose combed brown leghorn. Why is it still considered a leghorn if the comb is different? All the other leghorns they have are single combed. I thought if they were the same breed combs were the same. Like all the plymouth rocks are single combs no matter the color. What makes the rose comb leghorn a leghorn and not a different breed?

Some breeds have single or rose comb . Rhode Island Reds have single or rose comb also . That is why one breeder started rose comb Legbar . Since Leghorn is one of the breeds used to create he figured it would pass .

It seems like almost every breed has leghorn in it or was used to create it. Is there a reason they are used to create so many other breeds?

Some bulls we looked at yesterday.

I never got pics of the four bulls we were considering but got pics of the pure simmental. The four we were looking at were Simmental Angus cross. Purebreds were $4500 a piece and mixes were $3500.

They are laying machines . Production bred are far different than show lines . Show lines are larger and probably not as productive . The production bred white are the smallest bird , least feed and the most eggs for the cost .

I kind of figured that plus they lay large eggs too, don't they?
