Surviving Minnesota!

Just want to add: I am no expert on honey but I've heard you don't give it to human babies, don't give it to hummingbirds and somewhere don't remember where said not to give to chicks. So just to be on the safe side I wouldn't give it to them.

I get quite a number of birds shipped to me, and although I am often frustrated with the USPS the Duluth main office is very good to work with.
They have asked me how early I would like to be called, and they have early pick up where you ring for service.
I have not received chicks for some years, but deal in racing pigeons. The time in transit can be a problem especially after their scale back in processing. Thank goodness baby pigeons are very resilient, but baby chicks are another matter completely.
Prior to the Avian influenza BS SpeeDee delivery was a very good alternative for many states in the Midwest. I don't think they have begun accepting live birds again, although I wish they would.

Apple Cider Vinegar and raw garlic are commonly used in the racing pigeon community. The vinegar is to establish a proper ecidic level in the gut and helps eliminate canker. The raw garlic is added to the drinking water and is an agent which stimulates the immune system.
The vinegar is added to the water to administer, but not on the same day as garlic.
I use these things for my chickens as well, and have no health issues, knock on wood.

Annadale is the only cow I got pics of yesterday! We also got abother calf the other night! Its a little bull calf named Robin. Like Batman and Robin. There is another cow that was a little off so if she didnt calf tonight I think she will today or tonight.

There is nothing better than being able to trust a mother cow. I was able to move her oyt of the calving pen so she could drink and eat while her calf stayed.

The CLB roos have been out in the run, with their heated brooder for almost a week now. They are doing just tine. Additionally, I got some of those watering nipples and drilled holes in bottle caps, plus a hole at the bottom of the bottle and strung a wire through it so I could hang the bottles up side down. They have done well catching on to the tapping of the nipple to get their water. No more messy water bowls! Yea! Made one for the chicks inside also and some have learned and others are not so fast to figure it out. I do not help because I give them a chickie water bowl also as I do not want them to go without water. I remove it a few hours a day so they have to use the nipple if they want hydration.

The end of May I am suppose to be getting hatchery grade - 5 of each: Red-laced Wyndotte, Welsummers and Easter Eggers. I do not need 15 more birds. Do any of you want to buy a couple of these. I want like, two of each. And maybe I can talk one of my sons' into taking four as he might be getting talked into a few chickens.
