Surviving Minnesota!

Kloppers for next year write down: Cherokee Purples and Green Zebra Tomatoes.  OMGosh are they sweet.  The cherokee purple I can eat like a peach.  They are that good.  I also LOVE the little yellow pear cherry tomatoes and the Amana Orange...sp?  tomatoes...the latter are a double so very meaty tomato.  The last few years I've got into growing different varieties of basil.  It is so much fun.

Now I'm itching to get my hands in some dirt.  It is rock solid right now though.

--Craig Lake (Lake by the Airport) has went out.  I wonder if your spot is close or ready to go...?  Heading over that way for coffee Sunday.  Maybe I'll drive across the County Rd. and sneak a peek.

I've heard good things about the Cherokees and have grown the pear types too which are yummy. I would grow hundreds of kinds if I had the time and space!

I have been growing herbs in my basement this winter (that sounds sketchy haha.. Cooking herb not the illegal herb) and that has been a fun learning experience. I have 2 kinds of basil, Rosemary, Greek oregano, sage, and spearmint. I have been practicing cutting and rooting on the basil and rosemary. I will be taking more cuttings from a sickly basil plant this weekend and tossing the roots I think. It got leggy last summer when I over harvested and then the branches got woody except for the new sprays growing off it. It is very slow growing too. It is amazing that a basil cutting put in a plug with a dab of rooting horomone will root like crazy!

No worries Kloppers. I don't envision you at all growing funny herbs.

Last year I had a basil bowl next to my grill for home made grilled pizzas....(mmmm---mmm---Mm!) Plus it was just nice to look at. Or I'd pluck some for a Caprese salad and the Tomatoes grown in pots on the deck. It worked out very nicely.

I'm going to do a Lettuce bowl this year too. For my lunches when I go home. Just clip clip clip. Let it regrow... a few days later....clip clip clip. My container gardening is a blast on the deck. Very convenient too.

Hey All, I tried to catch up on all the reading but my eyes got blurry, wow so much going on new fuzzy butts everywhere.. New calves, new people, including Youngins,, I do agree make sure u little ones stay safe and don't give out to much info.. Not sure how all u farmers have time to do anything, seems like I have way to much to do all day and not nearly enough energy, I'm already exhausted and it's not even 11:30... Sons coming over to help unload the last of my last storage pod. Fencing guys are here putting up fence, I hired another helper for my helper , roll off got here today, carpet is all put in and inside painted, I got trees planted and need to start flowers that are still in buckets. Menards has taken most my money so that must mean I'm almost done LOL ... Ralphie delivered 3 turkey hens to me and Porter seems to be happier. BUT I love it.. Take care all, Be safe and stay happy...

We did a salad bowl last year....worked wonderfully....just make sure the planter you use has a drainage spout....we learned the hard way. Other than that it was a huge success. My lettuce bowls for the neighbors bunnies have been planted as well.

I have 2 lettuce bins growing in my basement with my herbs. I just at the one last week and it looks like it is trying to come back. If not the chooks will get it to eat the stems. It was a fun experiment.

I tried lettuce in the garden last year and that was a flop. Couldn't keep the weeds out of it. I will try to make a little raised bed maybe for that and spinach if I find the time.

I bought 30 of the 5 gallon size grow pouches to put these young trees in . Hoping that they grow fast with a good root system . I may set up a self watering system like that with rubber roofing / pond liner .

The north Dakota state assessments are horrible!!!
