Surviving Minnesota!

It's 45F and 7:45am in SW North Dakota

That's good we will get that weather in about 10 minutes with this wind from the NW. It is only 24 here..

Also we had a surprise this morning! Judy walked by the hatcher and said she heard a chick inside. I said she was nuts. She opened it and there was a newly hatched chick! Seemed all healthy and 2 days after the rest. I would have thrown the eggs out yesterday had I not been doing grandpa daycare!

Jerry, I have been tempted to use the grow bags for nursery stock but have not tried them yet. I have hundreds of plant pots which I can recycle at no cost other than to clean and disinfect, but there are advantages with the bags. Where did you buy yours from?

I got mine off ebay 2 different times . I found the ones without handles are cheaper . Some are using the cloth WalMart bags . I need to check the price on those . This is my first year to use them . I am thinking of setting up a self watering bed .

Windy as all get out, no snow here, just a bunch of Cottonwood fuzz...

LOL, you keep telling yourself that maybe you'll believe it

Ralphie, there is a guy who raises Ameraucanas in Washington state that has had a project of raising a line of rose combed Barnvelders. I think he is still working on the project, and if he gets to the point of having extras it would be tempting to get some?

22 degrees, windy as heck, and... Snow? Banana belt is letting me down! Wind woke me up, i was like what the h was that? Crazy

for what it is worth Ralphie, in a couple of years I'll be out looking for a chocolate egg layer or 2 with a rose or pea comb, so keep up the great work! I think many minnesotans would love more variety with smaller combs to help avoid the frostbite, for back yard chickens anyways.

They would be. I never realized when you first mentioned to me how badly the winter affect the combs. I am glad to see others working to other combs on what is essentially a single comb breed. That is what has me excited about the rose combed Leghorns Urich has.

They would be a great bird to mix in to bring egg laying quality back without bringing the single comb back in.

Are you sure it is snow? Did you go out and roll in it? I think you might be seeing cottonwood fuzz and not snow. I would roll in it myself, but I am allergic to cottonwood pollen.

Well it is official, winter is back. We got about 3 inches over night and temp is 18 degrees at 8:00. the next several days are forecast to be below normal temps as well, and normal this time of year is not that great.

I need a barn cat to take care of rodents, weasels and rabbits, but hard to find one that does not hunt birds.

Ralphie, it will help to defray expenses with selling the EE chicks, and it legitimizes hatching some more. You could likely develop a good market for those EE chicks as people want those colored eggs. The same goes for the dark brown laying breeds. I hope the weather in the Banana Belt is better than mine or you won't get done what you want very quickly.
I have extra barn cats if anyone needs some. They might go after wild birds but they leave the chickens alone.

We got the barn cat today. We were going to keep it in the barn for a day or two. But my younger sister already let it out..
