so I am a little peeved with Hoovers right now. I have an order of 50 CXs due this thursday (shipped wednesday). I took the day off work and all. This weekend I get an email saying that there was some unexpected yada yada yada and now they are shipping tuesday. A bit of a hassle but oh well. Now at 5:30 i just get shipping confirmation from USPS!! last shipment that meant they were already in the mail when i get the email!

i give Hoovers a call and wouldnt you know it they close at 4 and I need to wait until tomorrow and call back!

i dont know if I need to pull some strings so i can be at the post office at 830 tomorrow morning or if that just means they printed the shipping label a day early??? Of course the USPS site is not up to date. last time it didnt even update to say they were on the way until i already had picked them up.

what to do!?!?!?!?

My Post office calls me at about 4am when I get chicks in.

Ralphie how much do you know about the Chanticleer breed ? I remember when they recreated them . Then they found someone that still had a few of the originals . Sounded like a effort to make them legit in people's minds . I know a couple of guys that are into them . Ameraucana breeders . Never took a interest in them myself .

I went and searched trimming vents, I was reading a thread and it said "use eyebrow scissors. I read it out loud after having told my wife Jerry says to trim the vents.

She asked how short and with what, I excitedly said "Use Eyebrow Scissors!"...

Her face turned white she stared at me and said "NO, that's the last straw you go buy your own!"... 

I wonder why!?

Does anybody follow the Backyard Chickens page on FB? I think I dislike it.

I un-followed that group such a long time ago. It's like it's not even the same people! The threads, comments, admins, are nothing like actual BYC. I tried really hard to stay, but it hurt my head to watch it. I have actually left all the chicken groups on FB, too. I'm in a good milk cow one, a backyard bee one, and few good rabbit ones. There's a MN Homesteading group that's pretty good.

From what Jerry said and what I read the feathers can interfere with reproduction. I have had a problem with the PC eggs being clear. It could help change that if I give them a haircut.

Why do you trim anyway?



You trim to help fertility . On fluffy birds the extra fluff is a physical barrier . On most chicken breeds it is not a problem . The birds can open the feathers during breeding . Too many feathers and they get in the way . Often a problem on show Quality birds as extra feathers make the bird look heavier than it really is .

It doesn't bother old english bantams does it? I haven't noticed a problem so I'm guessing they are fine.

I was talking about the taking video part but I think the flying would be even better.

No OE are hard feathered . Not fluffy at all .

I do not know much about them, other than they were developed in Calgary and the guy that developed them did not want them named Chanticler. I ; like their personalities. That could be from the Breeder I got mine from, but they are nice birds. Ed is an unbelievable rooster. Whatever I know I found on the internet and from what EJB told me.

I have not found anything I don't like about them other than I cannot get their eggs to develop. And of course the fact they are both Broody right now. They are real good layers, when they are not broody, I think I get 13 eggs a week from the 2 of them, they very seldom miss a day. They do not seem to eat a lot either.

I know they are suppose to be dual purpose, but to me they are a tad light for the fry pan. Mine look a lot bigger than they are. At first I thought I had some problem because they very light for their size. But the crops were filled at night and empty in the Morn. Body wise they are about the same size as my Speckled Sussex but they probably weigh a 1 or 1 1/2 less.

I actually think I could make those a main stay of my flock if I can ever get chicks. Plus I need chicks to give to EJB, I owe him some. The comb is priceless to me. I am tired of single comb's freezing.

That is about all I know. Please tell me anything you know about them, Oh as I understand it them and the "white" Chanticler are not the same breed.

I saw that and commented in the Cream legbar thread,,,,,,,, It will drive some purist nuts when they see I congratulated on a non-SOP bird...LOL...


I was going to ask you if you had a hint to the sex. I looked at the leg and thought rooster, but that could be camera angle.. BUT he does have his leg pulled up....


Any idea what pairing gave it to you? Can you isolate them? You must have 2 with the gene! I wonder if Heidi knew she had the gene in her flock? It could be she did not own them long enough for it to present itself.
