Surviving Minnesota!

The one week old chicks got a couple of new toys.....toilet paper tubes. While the 3 day old chicks are still playing the game "Stayin Alive - Stayin Alive". When my son asked why I gave the chicks toilet paper tubes my husbands response...."So they can wipe their own butts." Son gave the eye roll. But I am kinda tired of cleaning pasty butts. Only 1 of my week olds is having to be checked but 10 out of 15 of the younger ones were pasted. Any ideas why so many....These were the resends from Hoover's Hatchery....they did look pretty tough (in comparision to the prior week), so I gave them Save-AChick Probiotic & Electrolytes. Do you think the Save a chick is pasting them up?

I see I am late in responding to this, but in my limited view , Kloppers hit it on the nose. While many things could contribute to pasty butt, heat is the biggest reason I have found. Pull the heat lamp back or turn the MHP down a notch. I have found it to be nearly non-existent with the MHP though.

My Cochin bantam from my pet chicken can fly pretty well even though she is heavy and has tiny wings. My breeder Cochin bantam doesn't fly high at all.
She must flap pretty fast to hold herself up!

Nope, I let her run off and do her thing, I figured let her die however she wants. I think she spent a few days under the granary in the sand.
Hmm, tough chicken!

Oh, man, tell me about the weeds last year! If my veggies grew half as well, my grocery bill would be down!
Know an owner, not for sale, though. Sorry, they are pretty cool to watch!
I haven't been able to trust sushi or sashimi here besides Sakura in St. Paul. I will take your recommendation under advisement!
Okay, thank you!

Just curious - will you be using them for competition? I always thought that was pretty cool.

That's a great deal! Welps is the only other hatchery I know of that does frees shipping and I think their minimum is 25. Excellent color choices!

If you travel through St. Paul I recommend Ruam Mit Thai if you like Thai food. I guarantee it's the best you'll ever have. I'll be working in St. Paul this weekend and I pretty much live off of their food when I'm out that way.

How exciting for the kids!
No, I just want them for fun as pets.

BC I see where you had a high of 81 . We only got to 69 yesterday . I did some plum grafting and pear yesterday . Darn pup ruined about 10 of them . I had to redo .

She now is in the kennel with the adult beagle . No more fenced yard time for her . She is 6 months .

How is your hound dog doing?

Busy day..

My wife asked the question " when will you stop hatching? last night. Followed by " don't you think you have enough birds now?"...

These could be bad signs....

What could be worse is I just put:

15 JJ turkey eggs
6 Adam turkey eggs

6 Buckeye Eggs (Duane Urch)
11 Dominque eggs (Urch again)

in the hatchers! Can you believe 11 Dom eggs hatched, I got 11 from him and by mistake he had a BA egg in the dozen. The only non-hatcher was the BA.

The buckeyes are 6 for 12, not bad for eggs I traveled to get. Even so a 75% rate going into the hatcher is not bad for me.

Now my hatchers are divided nicely so I can mark each chick. This will work good today...However I have:

32 Creamette eggs
6 Partridge Chanticler (YEAH!! Surprisingly these are good, the first good ones of the year, It took Ed a while to do his job, now I feel bad I trimmed him...)
3 Partridge Chanticler over EE........)

I might need to find a new hatcher. or a place to sleep at night....The good thing is Judy is working this weekend and might not notice the new chicks....

BC, I can't name her lucky. I was thinking Typhoid Mary would be cute.

Oh I just LOVE Typhoid Mary! That's super funny and Cute.

As everybody has said do a little digging on appropriate temps for chicks their age. You need to keep raising the lamp the older they are getting. And offer a cool space and a warm space (usually away from the food and water. So I Align my lamp to one corner of the brooder when I brood chicks. I also found when brooding chicks that a 1/2 capful of Apple cider vinegar to the small water fount also adjusts their little bowels to some extent. And their Poop forms better and processes their food better. Keeps bad bacteria at bay.

BC, a run to Minniechickmama's for eggs? You should end up with some quality birds assuming you hatch goes well.

Her birds are Amaze-balls. The chicks zip their egg and walk right out of the shell, practically. Hefty breeder birds with gorgeous conformation. She knows her stuff. I'm very lucky to have the BLRW and Buckeye from her. Now I need that egg color. I'm so freaking excited I bought the chick feed yesterday at L & M already and I have a month to go yet. Eggs get set on Wednesday!

@jerryse I thought it felt warmer than the predicted 74. The AC was not working well in my Envoy yesterday either. ugh...

Puppies are a joy aren't they? Maybe your pup can come over and learn some new tricks from mine...? (Just what he needs)
