Surviving Minnesota!

hi Chickeners. I have been busy as each of you have been for these nice days. Campfire is burning and I need to get back out there to watch it of course.
So relaxing to watch. Beautiful evening. Came in to marinate the salmon DH will eat for dinner after he grills it.

I guess nothing is new here. Just the normal chickie stuff. Hope each of you is doing well.

Holm's little sister has good taste.

We had fished Lucky out of the tank and Holm was holding him. They wanted some non-show birds for the blue eggs.

I was giving them the darkest of my hens ( hoping they are hens) I gave one to his one sister. I asked his other sister which one she wanted and she pointed and said she wanted "the white one"....

I nicely told her "not in a million years,...

Ralph this little gal is in love with my sister! She snuggled up in her legs when she was holding her! She gave it a name... Its Pecker... Now now stop laughing! Shes just little and was trying to figure out why me, my mom and my aunt were laughing so much... We didnt tell her... But she is a sweet bird!

Btw the second pic is of the one I was holding.

I like that second birds close up. The crest really shows. It is amazing for having just 3 parent stock how much variation I have in color on the birds, from some very silver barred ones to the dark ones like you got. It amazes me they are not all more alike in color.

Today I was giving one of my Marans a butt wash because she had poopy butt and needed it, well I think she had a heart attack. She died right while I was cleaning her in the laundry tub. She didn't drown I only had two inches of water and only her back end was wet. She was 4 yrs old and had started laying big pretty brown eggs again this spring.
About 3 weeks ago she was just sitting in the yard and was breathing open beaked and her comb was turning purple so I'm guessing she had a bad heart.
Sure made me feel like crap to cause her death though.
Her name was Hoppi, when she was just a new chick she had something wrong with one leg and would hop, the other chicks picked at her so I separated her until her leg healed.

That is a bummer, sorry... at least she died happy in your arms..

Why are birds so mean to each other? Can't they all just get along!

The purple comb is a dead giveaway on a heart problem. MY last CX has that same problem. She does not have long for the world. SHe has stopped laying eggs, but Bert has her all beat up, so that might be it too.

I should have had Holm demonstrate his AI skills with Bert today.

I had a chicken named Hoppy also, she drowned....

Buckbeak is getting more brown feathers everyday!! He's a cross between a Silver Laced Wyanndotte and a Chantecler.
He was going to be butchered, but my dad and I both like him so for now his life is spared. And R.J. needed some competition for alpha rooster anyways
