Surviving Minnesota!

Maya (our dog) must be feeling better, she just ran down to the yard barking.

This weekend she rolled in a dead porcupine, and got more then 200 quills in her..

Today was miserable weather, rained all day, hailed a little bit.
I didn't get anything done outside, I just got some chicken plans done inside.

I drew out some plans for breeding pens. I think I'm just going to breed and competitively showing Polish, Cochins, Silkies, and maybe one other breed.

I'll maybe post the plans I drew up later tonight, I'm pretty impressed with them.

I am hoping to get some laying chicks from Murray McMurray soon. I'll most likely order around 25 new chicks!!

Help! 6,5 weeks old. black Australorp over Ameraucana. Male or female? Thoughts? Named her Oprah the day we got her as she sort of feather sexed a female (amateur here). Will I have to change name to Montel?!?

400

400

Female, and it looks like she's crossed with something other than Americana, she's to gangly.

How hard did they come out?

My dogs "captured" a porcupine at the cabin a few years ago, it was terrible. The stupid one even had them in the roof of her mouth. What a pain to get out. Every time I jerked one out she cried. Worse part is a few days later the stupid one had one up a tree. She was going nuts barking at it. I am sure she just saw it up the tree had it been on the ground I would have been pulling quills again.

Good morning all! We survived the storms down here. Ended up putting the CX chicks in a box and bringing them down in the basement with us. The tractor just doesn't provide enough cover. We slept down there just to be safe. I was also nervous because I had the camper hooked up to the truck (towed to town for new tires today). I was worried if we did have a tornado come by the camper would toss the truck but I wasn't about to go unhook it.

Everything is back to calm today

Ouch! That had to have hurt! I am so glad we have never seen a porcupine here. I fear we would be up to the same task. I don't think they live down here at all

Thank you cluckies. It's frustrating. Feels like we can't get ahead. And extra work for me... Because he can't. Spring is just hard... The added yard work, etc etc . Now this. It will for sure be cutting into my BYC time I'm afraid. Lol

Sorry violet about your baby chick.

Isn't that the truth!

I have so much to do, I will never get it done. I am such a push over I help others too much. I need to learn to say "No". A young couple that live between Ivie and us as become friends with us. I guess they like smelly old people. I guess to some of you they would be an old couple as they are just shy of 40, to me they are young. I spent 2 days this week building a coop for him and panels for the run. I don't think he did much hands on work as a kid and wants to learn. It is fun working with them but it takes from my stuff that needs to get done.

Yesterday, I showed him how to change his rotors and brake pads, so that took time. Again, he just wants to learn how to do it. He was amazed how much money he saved doing it himself. I think he said the shop wanted $600 to do it.

I have my friends tractor/backhoe here and I need to repack the hydraulic cylinders, repair the steering, change oil and fix some of the wiring on it, I know he wants it soon, but I just have not had tome to get to it. I know that will take 4-5 days or more to do.

A good weekend on chick sales, I brought in a couple hundred bucks, so that means I only lost a few hundred! The WWD seems to not understand basic economics. I brought in money and she is still complaining. She found the receipt from Martie's for $225 of feed and got all "wifelike" about it. Saying things like " When are you going to quit buying things?".......Gee whiz the babies have to eat!

BC I think we all have that same insurance policy now. I am feel so bad for him, once a knee is hurt, it gives problems for ever it seems. I am also really feeling your pain over the wallet being hurt.

Another rainy day, so another day of work in the shop building more panels and brooders.

BTW I noticed no one has posted today, has their been a break out of small pox I did not know about ? Or leprosy and all your fingers feel off? (for you English majors that are mortified when I start a sentence with a conjunction, the major writers in history have started nearly 10% of their sentences with a conjunction, so there!

I doubt you do, I have not seen a porcupine down here in 50 years. The last time was at my Great Grandpa's farm. ( I never knew my Great Grandpa, but my Grandpa and his brother kept his farm for several years after my Great Grandma died, whom I did know) and after that interesting tidbit I will move on. (BTW she was even older than EJB's 98 years when she passed)....

Glad you survived the winds.

My DH is like that, always helping people which is very nice! but sometimes I want him to stay home and do things here that need to get done... and I don't mean that in a ______ way.
If you lived by us Ralphie my DH could help you and you could help us

it would be the perfect set up!!!

I forgot one piece of news!

I candled eggs yesterday for the next few days hatch. I have fertile Toad eggs! However, I do not think they hatch until the 13th. I don't recall the hatch date on them. I was in such shock to see a couple developing I forgot to check the date and just went to have a Mike's to celebrate.
