They also asked if I was willing to come in to the classroom and talk about chickens. Of course I will never pass up a chance to talk about chickens we will see how it goes and see exactly what they want to learn. I'm hoping it works out so that this can be more than the kids getting to see eggs sit in the incubator and then hatch to see some cute chicks. I have no idea what the experience level is for the lead teacher in regards to chickens but I would assume closer to none than the other way.

My only tip: Remember the KISS Principle (Keep it Simple Students). Up until this project 20 of the 22 kids thought eggs came from the store.

Yeah I can see that being the case with these kindergarteners. Originally we had talked about setting extra eggs so they could crack a few open early in the development to see the development but decided that might be too intense for the young kids. I remember doing that with quail eggs when I was in 3rd or 4th grade.

As long as I don't have to field questions about the 'birds and the bees' I should be good to go

Here is a hen .
I got serious about barring because a couple of respected Breeders said you could not get slate legs in the presence of sex linked barring . Therefore they could never be a Ameraucana . So I had to see if it was true . I will admit it is difficult and they fade with age . Many have spotted legs because of the barring gene . Until someone said can't be done I was only tinker with the genes .

I culled the black ones and the light ones from the top picture plus some Erminett that were only black . Cull = set aside as inferior . They are in the broodies nest now . Going to the sale Friday as EE . Might sell with the broody .

With all the talk about whites on here I couldn't help but chime in about my father in law's hatchery stock white rainbow that we are raising for him. It is all white with dark eyes so not albino sorry...you don't have anything special.

True . My interest is to see if they can be auto sexed at hatch . Most say no . I am not so sure . Yeah there is a pattern here . When someone says impossible I just have to see if it is true . Only way to find out is to breed them and see what is true .

Kloppers. When I first did this for the kindergarten. I brought the eggs in and then my friend had me field questions. the KISS theory is a perfect theory for 5-6 year olds. Their biggest question is how do you tell boys and girl chicks apart. I said "good question!" and that it is very hard to do right away out of the shell. My friend had to redirect some of my answers to make them simpler for the class or redirect the boy/girl questions which ranged at some point at being asked about 10 times. LOL. Why are the eggs different colors comes up, as well.
