Good morning experienced chicken and dog handlers! sigh...today is a sad day. My 14 week puppy did it and killed a chicken. He starts puppy training Saturday with a usual puppy class. I'm not sad for the chicken, not my favorite and not mine, it's the hubby's. But, I'm sad for my future struggle with getting him trained to not do this again, because my girls are precious to me! I should have watched him closely so I know it's my fault, but this chicken also got out of his run and chronically is always getting out after we have saved him many times from being chased by Olaf, the puppy. The chicken was about 5 months old, maybe not smart enough to learn to stay in his freaking run. But, it looks like Olaf had a taste of freshly killed chicken, he had blood all over his paws and he led me to the spot and I found the chicken headless. So, being shocked, I didn't punish him, just picked it up and threw it away, then crated him. What should I have done? And what should I do now? Does anyone know if there is a dog trainer around the forest lake area that can help with a situation like this? My dream is to have everyone free ranging someday in peace! Right now, all the chickens have been penned up and I really would like my girls to be able to explore more and dig up new grass instead of turning the current pen into a large dust bowl. The girls are only 3 months old, but someday I would like them to have their freedom.
