BTW  when I mention one dies it is just as info, I do not expect condolences, then I feel bad for not feeling too bad. In her case it was inevitable she was so crippled.

That's the way I feel now. Oh I had my special girls that cried over but this hen is aloof and wasn't as friendly but still one of the originals. The originals are the harder ones usually. As I go it gets easier and easier. But still felt.

Anyone plan on going to the Crow Wing county 4H fun day tomorrow? I thought I would wander up there and check it out. I'm not real sure what it's all about but with "fun day" in the title I hope it's fun.

Is it automotive supply and you soak a rag and put it on their beak?

I am going to crow wing fairgrounds tomorrow....


We use the plastic container dishwasher soap comes in. We line it with paper towels so it is comfy, Then we lay the chick in the container. We put a soft shop towel over the bird so he does not get sprayed directly. We then squish up a soft shop towel, (the blue paper towels) and fill it with ether. Shut the lid and let him go to sleep.

Ether is just starting fluid, you can get it anywhere...

It is pretty humane, the chick does not seem to struggle at all.

I thought about writing an article for her with pictures, to see if I can win another trip to New Zealand from BYC.

I tossed the younger 'broody' BA off her nest tonight. She wasn't on it this afternoon and had knocked the divider between the two nests down and was pestering the other hen. There was another young BA hen playing pancake since I moved the other two hens to the hutch and she won't break so I just dropped her on the nest. She plopped right down and got to brooding.
Are the eggs she is on lost? Should I let her get settled for a day or two then sneak a fresh batch of eggs under her? It has been cool here and I would guess the other hen was off the nest most of the day I would guess

You might have lost a day or so on hatch time, but I doubt the eggs went bad that fast, She had not been sitting that long had she?

Set them on Monday night the 9th. I would say there is potential she could have been off the eggs for periods of time over the week too. She wasn't committed to the job it seems
