Surviving Minnesota!

@duluthralphie
Do you have any hatching eggs (chicken) for sale? I have another broody and would like something besides EE's this time.

I will be taking a trip to Blaine tomorrow.

Winter onions are also known as top set , multiplier , and Egyptian walking onions . They are a type and different from other onions . Kind of strong .Best use is green onions . I have a few. I do not care for green onions . I like the bulb type and cooked .

I let the broody have freedom when I got back . She stayed on the nest . So I guess she will stay .

@bantiesrule is there any magical number of roo's you can keep? I have 22 chicks and at this time I am estimating I have 7 definite roo's so far? (and you know there will be more...it's inevitable) Can that large of a number get along? I just don't know how I am supposed to choose who I cull

There is no magic number in anything chicken related....remember chicken math?!! What works for me might not work for you or vice/versa. I usually try to keep rooster/hen ratio around 1 rooster for 5 to 10 hens. As I said before alot depends on area.

No worries, I am in no rush ha ha! Well that's good to know about the hatcheries. I ordered from Strombergs, mainly because it is here in Minnesota and the birds would not be traveling far. All of my birds seem to be happy and perky, ask the little bugger who tried to escape this morning!
I don't think Strombergs have any chickens in Minnesota at all, they are all shipped from out of state. At least that was the way they were about 30 years ago. I bought my first ever incubator from them and since we were going to be in the area, we just stopped to pick it up instead of shipping and they only had supplies there, no chickens or even baby chicks.

eta: Maybe that was closer to 35...... maybe 40 years ago.

Oh no...I am guessing you did not know Stromberg's is just a ordering company and everything is drop shipped from some where else.

I have lots of eggs... I have some dark eggs but they are all breed to an EE, BA, turkey, I could let loose of a few Speckled Sussex. Also I have Guinea eggs. Everyone is taking a break it seems.

Oh I have CLB eggs.

Amy hatched 7 EE's, they are 3 weeks old here, hatched May 1st and 2nd. Don't know what is what yet....

Now my Marans Cocoa has been in the nest box 3 days, she hatched a brood last year, I gave her 14 eggs and 10 hatched. 6 pullets and 4 roos.

First the good news!

I decided to take a trip to the onion patch. The Walla Walla are doing good, nice and green.

I picked 5 winter onions, they were delicious. I am thinking I might need to put a trip line around them, it appears more are missing. I inventoried them and I think I can get you one or two Kloppers....

I have another patch I started 2 years ago, I have not checked it lately.

Erli, I only have 1 SS egg. I was thinking I would get 2 today and 2 tomorrow for 5. I only got one yesterday. I even checked the hiding place they use, nothing.

I have turkey eggs ( 3-4 is all) I have a bunch of Guinea eggs. I have some BA eggs, but my rooster is in full fledged Molt, he looks bad, I am not sure if a rooster in molt can do his job. You would need to ask Jerry that. He looks so bad I am going to get a picture for here tomorrow. But I do have 6 of those.

I have some eggs I had marked to hatch, but did not get into the incubator, but I think they are eating eggs now, they are too old to hatch with any reliability. BUT still good for eating.

I have not gotten a PC egg in weeks! One is doing the pancake still and the other is on a solidarity strike. I have a Toad egg, if you want a toad. Or a mixture of stuff.

I just put eggs in the other night so I have some that have been cooking 3-4 days, but I doubt they would get up there in one piece for you, but you're welcome to try.

Sorry...I am not able to follow through on this, Just call me a loser...... The Wicked Witch of the South does...

I have tons of EE or brown eggs breed to EE's...

I checked under Ethel still eggs there. If they do not hatch soon I will candle them. She was good about letting me check her eggs, No Wrassling needed.

Did I mention I have Guinea eggs Erlibrd?

Last week when I was on my chick murdering trip to Brainerd, Judy helped me out.

She put the new hatchlings into the brooders while was gone. I had eggs in different drawers so I could keep them straight as to who was whom and what was what. I had 5 white chicks. After 10 days I can now tell them apart (I think) of the 5 chicks 3 are toads, 2 appear to be White Sports. They are getting fast and long wing feathers, comparable to the regular CLB chicks. They are not the massive birds the toads are. So I am hoping 2 white sport Pullets! I was hoping that was the case from the start but was afraid to say it out loud for fear of being wrong.

I may still be wrong, but I think with luck that's the case. I did notice one had a faint" white spot on the white".... Hard to see, but I think Jerry would know what I mean, It was located in the Female white spot area and not the male one... I bet that confused some.....

I do know which tray they came from if that is them, so that means I was right about the parents and who they are....

All birds except 5 new turkeys are outside tonight!
