Surviving Minnesota!

I have rechargeable batteries because the cost gets too high otherwise.

I also had to use a light on my 4 week olds, They cried when I turned it off, so I left it on.

I am searching Amazon for a rechargeable just for that reason. Won't it mess with them though as far as their bedtime, get up schedule? I thought about one of those crank up lights so it will just slowly turn off when it de-charges, what do you think?

I like the crank idea, I just hope the batteries die and the light fades away for them. If they were not so young I would not use the light.

These are some of my special broiler mixes I bred and they are just too big to keep indoors beyond 4 weeks. But they are still stupid like chicks are. So they semi-free range for a while now.

@MinnesotaNice tried to get some good pics of my 2 roo's and the ladies.....but instead this is what I got ha ha

They have much more red in their comb and wattles. I might have two pullets. The roosters seem to have more "streaks" to their coloring.

This was the worst week of my chicken years.

Today I lost one of the juveniles, a hawk probably.
5 minutes before I had counted all 7 then went to close the garden gate and came back to close the coop thinking they were all inside. The adults were but didn't see the juvies anywhere. Walked all around calling finally three came running and went in, then found 1 dead laying in the weeds. Puncture wounds to the head. Eventually found the other 3 hiding under a brush pile afraid to come out but got them inside.
Saturday I culled an old girl that wasn't doing well. Thursday Goldie died. Tuesday Edna died.
It has been every other day, I'm afraid of what might happen Wednesday

Sorry to hear all of these losses, Erl. I've seen crows come down and do the same thing to little ones.

Sorry to hear about your loss Erli!

Is anyone interested, or know someone who might be? http://marshall.craigslist.org/grd/5634497830.html

I actually might know of someone. I'll try to get in touch with her today. I know she was recently looking at some Pilgrim Geese as well, but I'm not sure if she picked any up. I'll PM you later.

@Siggie & @duluthralphie quit being such softies with the night lights. They will whine but guess what mine survived till morning. They are still whining 3 weeks into this routine and the lights go out at 9:30 every night.

Now who want to help me cull my first laying pullet who had a fight with the roost bar and lost.

I sold some chicks today to a teen about Holm's age. She was just like him nice farm girl and her Dad who bought her the chicks for her birthday! I do not believe when I was
14-15 I would have asked for chickens for a birthday gift. I was impressed with her chicken knowledge too. Her Dad seemed to really like Andy. They wanted to take him home, but as we all know Andy is not for sale. They came for 6 Speckled Sussex and left with and additional 2 creamettes and a creamer.

I invited her to the thread here, she says she belongs to BYC so hopefully she will show up here. They are very nice people. Why is it most chicken people are so nice?

Funny you should bring that point up, Ralphie. I was just telling my husband and another person we were talking with yesterday. My chickens are not just about my chickens. In this hobby, whether you show, grow or eat or treat them as pets, I have met SO many amazing people and made some very good friends through my chickens. I too am a social creature and if I can be in person with others, through my shared interest in these crazy feathered critters, I am come across some folks I know will be in my life for a long time and have provided me with laugher, personal growth, challenges to work or think harder, have given me compassion and support at times when others just don't understand when I am struggling with things only a chicken wrangling human would understand, and the personal support I have received through many of you has been what got me going some days or calmed me down when I needed it.

I have had a lot of heavy stuff going on lately and don't get to come on the site much, and for a while I have been trying to cut back on my time spent on just hanging out so I can try being more productive, but just a few minutes of getting distracted from the load of each day helps me get out and do what I need doing with my life.

So, this site may be about chickens, it is also about people, and I sure am glad there are people like all of you to help me get through it all. So, Thanks!

One of my young SS passed away overnight/yesterday morning. DH found her in the corner of the coop and he figured she was just sleeping in. True story....that is my husband. I couldn't detect anything concerning when I looked her over. I did notice she wasn't constantly running with my other little ones on Sunday. But she still seemed fine. I suppose this stuff just happens and that's the way it is.

This is a reach I'm sure, but is there any possibility she could have gotten shock from all of the rain and thunder sunday night? At one point, my house was shaking for almost 10 seconds. Even I was freaked out.

could they have huddled in the corner because of the storm and smothered her? I thought mine had killed one of my Cochins that way the other night. She was so far wedged into the corner, I had trouble getting her out? She gave me a horrible groan when I pulled her out of the corner.

She was in the corner they don't usually huddle in, but it's very possible. I didn't even think of that.
