Surviving Minnesota!

Holm if I might make a suggestion, Dominics. I really like mine. They are not a large nor fast growing breed. but they have a grace and beauty all of their own.
I will look into them! The only issue is I LOVE my big hefty birds. Thats another reason why I love my Bucks. They are already hefty beasts! They r bigger than my hatchery hens! Well except for the Brahmas... They have a little ways to go!

I love my Cochins but I think these are the last ones I will get. They are always broody! Which is good and bad!

All the ones I've had (two) have gone broody at least once, I even let marshmallow hatch chicks. I have four new Cochin bantam pullets this year. I'll have a broody party next year. Just get one, they're so sweet and fluffy, it's worth it.

Good morning Minnesota peeps.

Another gorgeous day in the upper Midwest.
We did some family boating yesterday ... Maybe another 4-5 boats on the lake but amazingly the lake mostly to ourselves. Seems like just a few use the lake.

If I would make considerations for small comb varieties large fowl: Dominiques (excellent foragers I've heard), any/all of the wyandottes, ameraucanas. All are eye candy to me as well.

All is going well on the coop front. June and Dixie are wanting to roost in the garage still so they are not roosting in the coop yet. I carry them down every night. Buggers.
They are cute and catchable in the two-steps-for-breakfast nest box that's on my front porch though.

First to post? What do I win Ralphie?

Second to post! Thats me! What would second prize be? LOL. This is fun and Ralphie and I started just as a bantering back and forth about who gets on when. During these nice summer days there is alot less traffic - of course.

I have caught up on the posts and was making a list of bird suggestions for Holms. Pea combs, Rose combs, winter hardy. Chanteclers or Partridge Chanticlers, Buckeyes, Jersey Giants, Salmon Faverolles, Dominics, Wyandottes, Ameraucanas. Wow! Interesting reading.

Take that d_ _ _ skunk for a ride! get it away from where a person does not want the smell and shoot it! It is a skunk. It will be road kill in a few weeks so get rid of it. Sorry I take the hard line but those animals are not all sweet and cuddly. I am not for going out skunk hunting (or cats, or coons, or coyotes, or wolves, bear etc. IF you like to do that - its your life and good for you. I don't hug trees either but hesitate to cut one down unless it is dead) - but if it wants to mess with me - well, thats just not nice. Same with ferral cats! Full of disease and spreading fleas and living on the river, they become road kill and scavengers when over breeding. Now don't go off on me here. I have adopted abandoned kitties and have take good care of each of my animals. I love animals. Not all animals have wonderful personalities. And when they are wild these animals are okay, in my book, to get rid of. You can say what you want about me and my ideas - IDC! So don't hurt your fingers typing.

Okay, now what I really want to say . . . . wet ole man, in boxers, LOL!!!! Good thing that grandson was along to do the leg work in the store. Too funny.

So I am reading about these broody hens and I thought that hens went broody to hatch chickies. Am I misinformed? I can look it up but I like to hear what you have to say.

Yes they do go broody when they want to hatch chicks. They go broody most often at the beginning of the year or right before their first birthday. But I had in that went broody a month ago and she finally gave up a couple days ago.

My 2 cents on Silver Laced Wyandottes.....We have 6 pullets all of which are flighty and avoid human contact at all cause. They are the most beautiful pieces of eye candy but they are the first to fly. They are excellent foragers and stay close to the coop. DISCLAIMER: They came from a hatchery. I ordered 4 and ended up with 8. (We rehomed 2.)
